Work Based Learning Placement | Brierley Hill Project
Brierley Hill — March 2026 to September 2020
During my placement at the Brierley Hill Project, I supported a wide range of community‑focused services including homelessness support, youth engagement, mental‑health support, and outreach work. I worked directly with individuals experiencing housing instability, offering practical assistance, emotional reassurance, and signposting to essential resources. I also supported young people through structured activities, mentoring, and early‑intervention programmes designed to build confidence, resilience, and positive decision‑making.
Within the mental‑health service, I assisted individuals experiencing crisis or ongoing difficulties by providing a calm, supportive presence and helping them access appropriate services. My outreach responsibilities involved engaging with vulnerable community members and connecting them with relevant organisations and support pathways. I additionally carried out administrative and reception duties, welcoming service users, handling enquiries, maintaining accurate case notes, and supporting the smooth daily operation of the service.
During this placement, I nominated the Brierley Hill Project for a Mentor Placement Award at the University of Worcester in recognition of the exceptional support, guidance, and development opportunities they provided — and the project went on to win the award. This achievement reflected both the quality of their mentorship and the strong professional relationship I built with the organisation. This placement significantly strengthened my communication, teamwork, and organisational skills, deepened my understanding of safeguarding and trauma‑informed practice, and reinforced my commitment to delivering compassionate, person‑centred support.
In my second year of the Foundation Degree, I nominated my mentor from the Brierley Hill Project for a Mentor within the Work Based Learning Placement Award at the University of Worcester. This nomination recognised his exceptional dedication, professionalism, and the unwavering support he provides 365 days a year to both service users and students. His contribution fully deserved recognition, and he subsequently won the award, reflecting the high standard of mentorship and commitment demonstrated within the project.
Institute Representative
Held the role of Institute Representative, serving as a key link between the institute, academic staff, and student body. I communicated student feedback, supported institute‑wide engagement, contributed to meetings, and helped promote a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Student Volunteering
Engaged in student volunteering that was formally recorded on my university degree transcript. This experience involved supporting a range of university and community projects, strengthening my teamwork, communication, organisation, and problem‑solving abilities while contributing positively to student engagement and community wellbeing.
As part of my Access to Higher Education course, I was selected to lead our group’s health promotion presentation. We chose to focus on breast cancer awareness, highlighting risk factors, early‑detection methods, preventative strategies, and the importance of routine screening. I coordinated the research, structured the presentation, delegated tasks within the group, and delivered key sections, demonstrating leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
Successfully completed my Access to Higher Education programme with overall Distinctions and two Merits, reflecting my strong commitment, high academic capability, and ability to perform consistently across multiple units. This achievement also contributed to being awarded a £1,000 Scholarship for academic excellence.
As part of my work‑based Diploma, I completed a placement at Barnardo’s Children’s Centre, where I supported children and families within an early‑years setting. This involved assisting with developmental activities, promoting safeguarding, supporting parents, and contributing to a safe, nurturing, and child‑centred environment. The placement strengthened my understanding of child development, multi‑agency work, and practical support approaches used within family services.
I achieved high credit within my course of study, particularly for my in‑depth work in the Case Study module and my Independent Study module on Understanding Autism. These modules allowed me to demonstrate strong analytical skills, independent research capability, and a deep understanding of safeguarding, ethical practice, and the complexities of neurodiversity.
Case Studies
As part of my academic training, I undertook in‑depth case‑study work on the Baby P safeguarding case and the Dr Harold Shipman medical malpractice case. This involved analysing multi‑agency failings, professional accountability, and the breakdown of safeguarding processes that contributed to both tragedies. Through this work I developed a stronger understanding of risk assessment, early‑intervention principles, ethical responsibilities, and the importance of clear communication and information‑sharing across services to prevent harm. These case studies reinforced my commitment to safe practice, vigilance, and professional integrity in all client‑facing roles.
Understanding Autism, developing in‑depth knowledge of the autism spectrum, sensory differences, behaviour patterns, communication methods, and the impact of autism on daily life. The course strengthened my ability to deliver person‑centred support, apply inclusive strategies, and work confidently with autistic individuals across a range of settings.

I became highly skilled in coordinating multiple responsibilities, advocating for their needs, and navigating professional and educational systems — all of which have enhanced my communication, empathy, and problem‑solving abilities.
This time allowed me to provide essential stability for my family while continuing to grow personally and professionally. Once the circumstances were more balanced, I returned to work with renewed commitment, quickly re‑establishing myself in roles across support work, advocacy, and legal services. The experience has given me deeper emotional intelligence, strong multitasking abilities, and a calm, adaptable approach — qualities that I bring confidently into my professional practice today.
Throughout COVID‑19 pandemic, the Black Country Living Museum open its doors to the first stage of the vaccination hubs I worked voluntary to ensure that the risk of infection was maintained with high standard of care during periods of intense uncertainty and operational pressure. I adhered to strict PPE and infection‑control protocols, managed increased workloads due to staffing shortages, and supported individuals experiencing heightened anxiety, isolation, and behavioural challenges. I quickly adapted to new procedures, communicated changes clearly to colleagues and service users, and ensured continuity of safe, person‑centred support despite rapidly changing national guidance. My resilience, flexibility, and commitment to safeguarding were essential in keeping clients protected and services running smoothly.
