Summary

My interest in primary care developed whilst on placement with Abbey Road Surgery in my final year of the course. I was able to work closely with all the different professionals within the practice to gain a valuable insight into the inner workings of a primary care setting. I spent time shadowing and assisting nurses with various appointments allowing me to develop my knowledge of chronic conditions and the vaccine schedule among other areas. I was then able to carry out my own clinics within my scope as a student which improved my ability to work autonomously with confidence and knowledge of when to reach out to other professionals for guidance or assistance. My passion for this area of practice grew due to the nature of the work feeling fulfilling to me. I enjoyed being able to build strong relationships with patients and follow their care long term. Also, the variety of the job day-to-day allowed me to constantly develop my knowledge and skills accordingly which I enjoy to do.

  • I developed my communication skills and compassion throughout the course through caring for patients and talking to families, often around sensitive subjects.
  • I have learnt to understand and tailor care appropriately for individuals dependant on their needs, for example personal care of patients in need of assistance while upholding their dignity.
  • Through completing a variety of placements, I was able to adapt to many different settings and specialities allowing me to appreciate the complexity of healthcare.
  • I gained and developed a range of clinical skills such as wound care, IM injection, and medicine administration.
  • I became competent in monitoring patients using approaches such as A-E assessments whilst working on ICU which allowed me to confidently recognise deterioration and escalate appropriately.
  • Whilst on placement in a primary care setting I was able to carry out my own clinics for appointments such as wound care, ECGs, blood pressures, holistic assessments, and suture/staple removal. This allowed me to gain confidence and initiative to respond to patients needs and discuss with the wider MDT where appropriate.
