Thesis

Using Radio Frequency Transceiver to Aid Education in Embedded Networked Systems and Prototype an Energy-Efficient Plant Watering System

  • Prototyped an automated plant watering system using radio frequency transceivers (RF transceivers) that waters plants when soil moisture falls below a predefined threshold.
  • Project aimed to demonstrate the application of 1-persistent CSMA and B-MAC in an automated plant watering system and determine if the system can be battery-powered.
  • Prototype also served as an educational example to students.
  • Gained experience in programming microcontrollers using AVR C, PCB design using Eagle software, connecting an RF transceiver module to the microcontroller via SPI, and setting register values to implement the MAC sublayer protocols.
  • Displayed excellent time management throughout the project, making good progress weekly and meeting all deadlines.
  • Updated outdated teaching materials in the university to facilitate the teaching and learning of the OSI protocol stack (particularly in the physical layer and MAC sublayer).

Past Projects

Masters Group Design Project (GDP)

  • Project lead whom successfully met every milestone according to the Gantt chart.
  • Worked for a client, based in York, UK, to aid professional farmers in developing a self-powered system that accurately measures soil moisture and temperature and stores the data for analysis.
  • Held frequent meetings with the client and relayed all requests to the team.
  • Worked collaboratively to prototype a capacitive soil moisture sensor, incorporating an interdigitated capacitor that accurately measures soil moisture and mineral levels through mathematical calculations by obtaining the amplitude and phase difference of the output waveform.
  • Technically led the wireless communications part of the project, which involves sending data using LoRa from the nodes to the base station.
  • Sole member in charge of implementing edge computing and data processing on the microcontroller.
  • Project selected for the annual University of Southampton ECS Showcase.

Biologically Inspired Robotics Project

  • Group project that involved prototyping a responsive robotic hand that imitates human hand gestures in real-time.
  • Technically led the embedded programming and circuit design parts of the project, which involved controlling and powering 16 servo motors simultaneously.
  • Prototyped a customised PCB to simplify the connection between the microcontroller, servo motors and power supply.
  • Established a wireless Bluetooth connection between the microcontroller and a laptop to transmit the 21 key points of the hand gesture.
  • Final prototype is showcased in this video: https://youtu.be/4TXdSNwSKIc?feature=shared
  • Project selected for the annual University of Southampton ECS Showcase.

Smart Meter Design

  • Project involved building a waterproof smart meter from scratch that regulates power flow based on the supply and demand of the load in real time.
  • Technically led the designing and prototyping of the PSU to power the smart meter from 240V mains.
  • Designed a transformer and capacitor charge pump PSU and manufactured the PCB for both designs.
  • Worked collaboratively with the team to aid in the programming of the microcontroller for load prioritisation as well as the designing and testing stage of interface circuit PCB.
  • Best performing smart meter in the cohort.
