I started my career with DPD in the summer of 2022 as a 7.5t collections and delivery driver. In September 2023 I was promoted to the class 2 collections and delivery driver. In August 2023 I was also given the role of the 7.5t vehicle assessor where I periodically assess all the other drivers in the Durham depot who drive a 7.5t truck. This role also covered any vehicle under 7.5t which includes the 3.5t and light vans. In June 2025 DPD put me through my class 1 licence and my test and training was in Wolverhampton. At the beginning of every shift I carry out my vehicle checks then look at my route for that day. I then reorder my route so that I am more efficient. Loading my vehicle in the order of my deliveries and ensuring the weight is evenly distributed. After leaving the depot I carry out deliveries in a safe and courteous manner. Ensuring all the deliveries and collections are within their given hour time slot. Using a handheld scanner to complete deliveries, entering the customer’s name as well as taking a photo for proof of delivery. Whilst delivering mainly to commercial properties, I’m also required to deliver/collect from residential properties. I've learned various routes, leading to increased area knowledge. I collect palletised goods or handball individual parcels onto my truck to take back to the depot to offload onto the awaiting trailer. All the time making sure the load is secure, does not move about whilst driving and does not get damaged. I’m constantly in touch with management from the depot to take on extra deliveries or collections should someone else be struggling, falling behind schedule or have broken down. I work every other Saturday during peak to help the depot deliver the excess parcels.
