Nestrans – The Regional Transport Partnership for Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.
I work in close partnership with local authority and a range of external partners, from community groups to national organisations, to;
I proudly served as a police officer for thirty years and retired at the rank of Inspector in charge of the staff, equipment and resources for the Road Policing Unit of Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray. I spent the majority of my career in Road Policing.
Both as a Sergeant and Inspector, I regularly supervised and managed missing person enquiries, often those considered at high-risk due to a range of factors. The urgency yet complex nature of these enquiries made them some of the most challenging to successfully respond to; from the persistent lack of available resource to properly attend to all the various tasks, to the lack of time available before the person might harm themselves or others, all the while with the ever-present desire to successfully save their life, find them unharmed and promptly return them home to love ones.
Throughout my career, I retained an appetite for further learning to expand my own knowledge and experience, to test myself and to provide enhance support for others. I was even more keen for others to experience learning and training to broaden and develop themselves, thereby helping the unit contribute more as a whole;
Evidence of my career achievements attest that I have a proven track record and am well skilled in responding to high pressure, fast-paced and demanding situations, to leading effective and supported teams, to tirelessly helping others, and to working closely alongside others to bring about successful outcomes.
(https://www.cyclinguk.org/) - I am a long-term member and supporter and share their mission of enabling 'millions more to cycle' and their vision to 'Imagine a country where cycling is a safe and popular mode of transport for people of all backgrounds and abilities, where air pollution is no longer poisoning our children, obesity has been eliminated, and traffic congestion is gone'.
Like Cycling UK, 'I want a cleaner, happier and healthier world and want people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to be able to cycle safely, easily and enjoyably'.
(https://www.grampiancyclepartnership.org/) - I created this group, together with others, to work proactively in partnership with local clubs, groups, associations, businesses and workplaces and individuals, the local authorities, government and national organisations to encourage, develop, promote and support cycling in all its forms across Aberdeen city, Aberdeenshire and Moray with the core aim of getting more people on bikes more regularly so they could realise benefits in respect of both their
physical and mental wellbeing.
(https://www.scottishadventure.org/) - I helped establish a group of like-minded people, organising local adventures, sharing knowledge, information and experience, forging friendships and receive a host of member-exclusive benefits and discounts. Scottish Adventure allowed for individuals to actively experience adventures in ‘the great outdoors,' often those types of activities that they hadn't tried before or not least, hadn't done so in many years, together in a safe environment, among friends, all to help bring physical and psychological benefits to the individual and to the group. SA is a registered not-for-profit organisation and supports a number of charities and community-based projects, such as Ellon Wheel Park through fundraising.
(https://www.nervs.org.uk/) - I volunteered delivering urgent/non-urgent medical samples and equipment between hospitals, healthcare sites and laboratories in the North East of Scotland when Healthcare Providers' own transport services do not operate. This helped ‘give something back to the under-pressure NHS' and instil tremendous camaraderie and community spirit among the group of volunteers, making sure we were all playing an unseen but critical part in helping save lives.

I am on the Committee of a British Cycling affiliated club for the Police Service, Fire Service, NHS, Coastguard, RNLI, Prison Service, and Armed Forces; the aim of which is improving lives through cycling, encouraging and supporting the joys of cycling, advocating for safe places to ride and producing inclusive rides and events. As a Club, I have helped establish a range of wellbeing initiatives with it now being a registered not-for-profit with monies going to several charities that support our first responders.
I am a trained pilot with the Aberdeen chapter of this Scotland-wide charity which provides free rides in an electric trishaw to those suffering mobility, isolation, loneliness, or life-impacting illnesses, particularly the elderly. I regularly volunteer as a pilot or outrider to take residents from care homes and sheltered housing out for a bike ride along our beach or through one of the city's glorious parks. This provides a tremendous platform for our passenger, and their carer or family member, to fully enjoy the unsurpassed experience. Bringing such joy to those facing such difficulties delivers a tremendous boost to the volunteer rider and outriders – we get almost as much back as those we take out do!
