JOHN O'MEARA

JOHN O'MEARA

Senior Registered Nurse
LONDON

Summary

My experiences have led me to apply for the role of a functional assessor with Serco as i am a people person foremost and always aim to be an advocate to help those who i care for to meet their primary objectives as well as being their voice. I have always tried to provide options, not advice for people to choose who suits them best. The more options you can talk through with someone can enable those who you represent to be limitless with what they can choose going forward. I have been a nurse for 16 years and have met many special people who i like to think have benefitted from my involvement in helping, guiding along the way and writing a better chapter in the health and wellbeing of their lives. I am open to a new challenge incorporating the skills i have acquired and to use them to help new people i meet to enhance and grow a fulfilling relationship of trust with my compassionate way.

Work History

Senior Registered Nurse

Barchester Healthcare
london
07.2018 - Current
  • After my trip to Japan, i came back and was approached to do some bank shifts as at that time, i was unsure of what to do next. Doing the bank shifts made me realise that how much i missed Magnolia and after consultation with the General Manager, there was an opportunity for a full time senior registered nurse position and it was refreshing as i was able to work in the Highwood unit which the focus there was for high dependency nursing and got to know staff as well as the residents. I continued to lead shifts, administer medicines, treatments to apply for each resident, care plan updating and reviewing and liaising with the current unit lead on where we aimed to meet the needs of the unit and fulfilling the workload necessary. I continued to work at times in memory lane which was great as i got to work again with previous colleagues and familiar residents from my time there previously. I continue to support my colleagues and meet the needs of the residents.

Registered Nurse

Barchester Healthcare
london
08.2013 - 03.2018
  • I started here in August 2013 at Magnolia Court as a registered nurse in the memory lane unit where i was inducted then led my team of which my duties included medication administration, care plan updating and reviewing, clinical observations for each resident, dementia led training and building a rapport with my new colleagues and the residents who resided in the unit. Over time, i build a solid foundation base for meeting the needs and fulfilling the workload. I was interviewed for a vacancy as the unit lead of which i was successful and from there, i excelled in running the unit, promoting a positive collaborative relationship with all staff. I was at the forefront of devising and implementing the 10.60.6 dementia project and for all staff to be open to this approach. All staff were trained in understanding the tools in place to detect where we can intervene to minimise distress. Trainings provided by Mr Phil Harper gave us the impetus to be effective in recognising the various types of dementia and ways to use validation techniques to reassure and achieve minimal distress for the residents. We had a very good team who endorsed these new approaches to become more specialised and gave me pleasure in knowing how to intervene, anticipate and be proactive in knowing how we can help someone who lives with this health condition. I liaised with my team on a regular basis to be proactive with all issues as best as possible and enjoyed using my knowledge to educate the staff working under me. I always recommended everyones input and this bode well when learning initiatives were part of developing awareness for all to aspire to. Relationships with families were vital too in recognising their feelings about the care provided and i was always approachable in being open, transparent and i like to feel i always tried to achieve as much as possible. My time in Memory Lane was very memorable but at the time of me leaving the company, my father in law had just received a diagnosis of alzheimers disease and it was time to support him and the rest of the family.

  • Observing their day to day health patterns, fulfilling area's of needs such as monitoring their vital sign's, maintaining and arranging any Hospital/GP consultations by arranging transportation and providing legible descriptions of current issues which needs to be addressed
  • I was a named nurse for some of the residents where i would have written their care plan and outlined area's of need and with next of kin liaison, we provide the care with consent from the resident to fulfil the person's needs and to evaluate monthly or when the need arises
  • I would liaise with Unit Manager to ensure staff rota has the required staff on each shift and to liaise with senior carer to make sure the duties are clearly allocated to each staff member so everyone is clear about their responsibility
  • I applied for the Charge Nurse position as i felt i was self- determined and confident in myself and wanted to build on further awareness of the role and to build further skills for the benefit of the residents
  • I aimed to foresee a wider perspective and be able to be more assertive and learn how to manage my workload to ensure the unit was efficient

Interests

HOBBIES/INTERESTS , I used to be a stand up comedian in the nineties, see below My manner is to be approachable, to assist anyone with their needs and be a source of entertainment, telling a joke or two to raise a laugh(hopefully!). I do play guitar and have on occasion brought it in to play songs to the residents and had consulted with the activities co-ordinator to see what type of music the residents like, Music can be a good source of enjoyment, can be spiritual, can stimulate, bring back memories and has therapeutic benefits for us all.
