INTERESTS AND HOBBIES

Outside of the workplace I enjoy mountain bike riding, hiking, gym, snowboarding, and socialising. recently I have been completing Munros across Scotland. I enjoy reading and listening to books, this really started through lockdown and hasn’t stopped since, I also enjoy movies and TV., In the village I grew up golf and cricket are a large part of the community, I played cricket for Falkland cricket club and Rugby for Howe of Fife throughout my youth and into my late teens, being part of these clubs for so long gave a sense of community and was a great way to make lifelong friends. These days I don’t play as much sport, I play 6 aside football now and again and regularly go to the gym., I like to travel, in 2019 I visited New Zealand for 3 months and more recently I travelled around South East Asia for 8 months, these were real adventures, hiking, surfing, exploring, meeting great people. I had the time of my life! But I think I’m all travelled out now.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

  • I grew up in a small village in fife, my childhood consisted of exploring the woods and hills on the doorstep of Falkland, I believe this is where my love for exploration and the outdoors began. After I had left school to pursue an outdoors lifestyle and workplace, I joined a six-week voluntary course to help on Falkland estate with the Falkland centre for Stewardship I began to learn about woodland and path management, forestry operations, fencing and pollution control. This sparked my desire to work with nature and most of all trees. I was then lucky enough to get a summer job working with an arborist and tree surveyor, Adam Reid. Adam had many large surveying contracts, for example, some place in Perth, I worked on rows of lime trees parallel to the road that led to the main entrance. These trees required slight crown lifting, as the site is prestigious the work operations had to precise and clean for aesthetic values.
  • I then furthered my learning at Barony College, this course was mainly focused on practical work, every Monday and Tuesday for the second semester my class mates and I would leave the campus in a mini bus for a day operation as a chainsaw team, I felled racks in the woodland, brashing and cutting the logs into 3 meter sections, then stacking them for the forwarder to collect. I then progressed on to the Scottish School of forestry, I found the reports and exams challenging at first, but I soon became more comfortable with the workload and work requirements and began to do better in my study’s, receiving higher grades. I then progressed onto BScH forest Management.
  • I took a year out of studying to work full time as an arborist, this was a beneficial learning experience for me as undergoing new jobs each day or week posed new challenges that stimulated the brain. Diverse working environments kept me engaged and focused on how to handles different tasks, such as controlling human and vehicle traffic under active work on trees or delicately section felling trees using rigging with property or targets below. Work in a small, experienced and productive team felt enriching and I felt pride in my work after successfully completing a task.
  • Meeting with clients and communicating work procedure to them whilst trying to understand their vison of the aesthetics of the site posed different challenges, it was vital to communicate well my reasoning behind the amount and type of work planned to benefit the tree as an individual, as the clients own the land and trees their say is final, so good communication and understanding was key in finding a balanced ground.
  • After university I was employed by Scottish woodlands Ltd as a Junior Contracts Manager, I was incharge of delivering the SPEN contract throughout central Scotland. I was in charge of surveyors and cutting squads, this would require me to complete weekly site/equipment/vehicle and personal audits, delivery safety briefs in the form of toolbox talks. I was also in charge of the company wide Scottish Woodland Ltd Utility Divison yearly safety audits.
  • I have no criminal convictions; I own a car and currently have 9 years no claims bonus on my licence.
