University overview

I have been a member and volunteer for St John Ambulance Cymru for the past two years. My current job role was the reason I decided to join the organisation. I felt that my nightly lead role in caring for and meeting the needs of our residents was an important, significant and challenging one so wanted to widen my knowledge within the field of first aid and be able to support those in my care with slightly more medical insight. I use the skills I obtain at weekly training sessions to assist on events the organisation are hired to cover. These can be motorcycle events, pop concerts, fetes or even dog shows.

I have also been able to participate in the Patient Transport Service sector of St John and assisted in taking several patients from home to hospital or onto a residential care facility.

During my time in St John and due to the locality of my home to our station, I am now part of the Responder Team and on occasions when I am not working and available, can, through the use of an alerter, respond to emergency 999 calls within my area. This can be anytime of the day and night and very often needs to be quick thinking. This highlights the importance of working well with your fellow responder or team or even the HCP's you may work alongside on the calls.
