1. Master’s Thesis: “Develop a numerical model to predict the post-buckled behaviour of a CFRP flat plate”.
• This project aimed to develop a numerical model to predict the post-buckled behaviour of generally orthotropic CFRP flat plates. First, a numerical model was developed using non-linear FEM.
• The methodology involved verification of the model by generating solutions for an isotropic and a specially orthotropic flat plate. Analytical solutions for both cases were then used for verification.
• Specially orthotropic materials are a special case of orthotropic materials, wherein the differential equations can yield a solution. Once verified for this case, the model was considered valid for orthotropic materials and was further used to predict the buckling load and the post-buckled behaviour of a generally orthotropic flat plate thus achieving the set objective.
• Skills including project management, non-linear FEA, ABAQUS software, hand calculations, and report writing were exercised during this project. Deep knowledge of the theory of composites, buckling, post-buckled behaviour, and non-linear FEA was gained during this project.
2. Major Group Project: “Advanced propulsion configuration for UAVs”.
• This project aimed to explore a novel propulsion configuration for UAVs, i.e., a SARM engine, and compare it with current propulsion alternatives.
• The following tasks were conducted for this project by different members of the group: A. modelling the novel SARM engine, IC engine, and the Wankel engine in GT Suite. B. modelling UAVs using AAA (Advanced Aircraft Analysis) software C. Input the engine parameters from GT Suite into AAA and analyse the performance. D. Comparison of results and report writing.
• The modelling of the SARM engine and the IC engine using GT Suite was assigned to me.
• Upon completion of this project, it was established that the SARM engine had a far superior efficiency and hence resulted in better performance of the UAVs in question.
• skills such as teamwork, leadership, GT suite software, AAA software, project management, team management, and report writing were exercised in this project. knowledge about the theory of various engines, UAVs, and their performance parameters was gained during this project.
3. Design and Analysis of Aircraft and Aerospace Vehicles: “Design of a hybrid-electric commuter aircraft”. • A hybrid-electric configuration passenger aircraft was developed as a part of this project.
• AAA software was employed for the same. The aircraft specifications and mission profiles were given in the assignment brief using which decisions were made about the aircraft configuration.
• The matching plot was used to obtain the power required.
• Drag polars and lift coefficients were calculated, and take-off and landing distances were established.
• The geometry of the plane was developed, and the centre of gravity (Cg) was calculated, after which sizing was done. The final design was thus achieved.
• skills such as Advanced aircraft analysis (AAA) software, project management, and report writing were used during this project. Knowledge about the theory of flight mechanics, small passenger aircraft, AAA software, flight configuration, and hybrid-electric propulsion was also gained.
