Quality Control Assistant

DFS Berkley Magna
05.2019 - 09.2021
  • My job role at DFS Berkley Magna is to ensure that any suites/sofas are up to the satisfactory quality standard before leaving the factory for departure to the DFS showrooms/customers' homes. As DFS is a very high in demand company, I have to ensure that every quality check we do is up to the highest standard. Making sure any imperfections on the suites are corrected immediately. This would usually be by repair from one of the upholsterers depending on where the repair is needed. For example, there is a different upholsterer for every part of the sofa including the platform, inside back, arms of the chair/sofa, etc. Once the repair on the product completed, I can continue with my quality inspection until the sofa/chair is up to quality standard. Sign then scan off the product and move it on to the belt to be transported to the loading bay.
  • Key skills and responsibilities
  • Ensuring all quality standards are met.
  • Ensuring all repairs are done correctly.
  • Ensuring all paperwork has been scanned off correctly.
  • Ensuring every ticket for each job has been read and understood correctly.
  • Making sure the colour, model, scatters, piping and shape of the job have been acknowledged and corrected if needed.
  • In addition, to make sure any pillow backs, scatters, seat cushions, seat backs have been filled with the correct interior. For example, there are many different interiors including memory foam, fibre, standard etc.
  • Ensure each model has the correct feet on the piece. Each model may is different and requires different shape and coloured feet.
  • I have to also check if the customer has requested any special instructions, which will be allocated at the top, of every ticket. If not, it will always be left empty.
  • Depending on how busy production is that day I sometimes may be moved onto a different department within the factory. Which is always a great way for me to learn new skills and hopefully have more job opportunities come my way with having a wider skill set. When I first started at DFS, I only had the knowledge to do the job of a Quality Assurance Officer. In the past two years, I have filled in for my supervisor on many occasions as her second when she has not been able to attend work. I have taken on the responsibility of being a team leader and keeping the QC staff organised and production moving. I have worked on cushion fill multiple times in the past, which is a very physically demanding job. I have also been on and off over lock machines to help with repairs when I have spare time. The more roles in the factory I can learn, the more confident I will be with understanding how a company and the departments in the company work.

Quality control inspector

Belfield Furnishings
11.2015 - 03.2019
  • Working within a fast paced, textiles factory environment, I am responsible for all aspects of quality control. My duty is to ensure all curtains; rolls of fabric etc are checked for faults to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. Nothing goes out to the loading bay without making sure every batch has been checked to spec, written down and recorded by myself against and I.O. If any fabric is not up to the quality standard of the company it will be an automatic rejection and will be sent back to the supplier, as I only have a certain tolerance to go by when it comes to any errors with rolls of fabric. Any faults that I am not aware of or I have not dealt with before I will always refer to my production manager before rejection. Any rolls that have been rejected will wait in the quarantine area while I wait for a non-conformance to be written before the supplier may pick up the roles. Other requirements within the quality role include:
  • Spot checks around the factory floor
  • Identifying, rectifying and resolving any production errors
  • Accurately reading invoices and orders
  • Filling out quarantine sheets
  • I will often move between quality control, cutting/packing and examiner. My duty when on cutting is to ensure all material is cut to the correct size whilst ensuring the correct pattern match has been achieved. As a packer I will ensure the batch that I am packing has the correct quantity, the right fabric is provided and everything in that batch is identical to what is provided. Within all these roles a fantastic eye for detail and the ability to work to a fast pace whilst remaining as calm are necessary.
