Additional Information

During 2006-2008 I was diagnosed with cancer (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei) and took 13 months off work for treatment and recovery. I suddenly became a patient and this gave me a whole new view of nursing, medicine and the NHS. I decided early on in this journey to make it into something positive and it has certainly made me a better nurse. Nobody will ever forget the nurse who smiled at them, made them feel cared for and who went that extra mile to ensure their comfort when they were at their lowest point. The qualities of compassion, trust, respect and integrity are vital for a nurse of any speciality and I always strive to demonstrate these in my practice.

As a consequence of my cancer and extensive surgery, I was left unable to become pregnant at the age of 26. However, through surrogacy and later, adoption, I am now the busy mum of 2 boys. I don't let problems get in my way, I look for solutions and am able to find a positive in most situations. I'm also rather proud that the Trust I worked for didn't have a surrogacy policy until I came along and wrote it! It feels good to know I've helped lay the groundwork for any staff undergoing surrogacy in the future.

Adoption took my husband and I into a world of safeguarding, looked after children and learning about how to cope with additional needs. The experience let us to our wonderful youngest son but also gave us an understanding of the care system, the long lasting effects early traumas can have, and ways to assist a child in coping with these. Although these are issues I deal with daily in my current role, being able to see them from "both sides of the coin" is a useful skill to have.

In short, my personal life has deeply influenced my nursing career, shaping me into the nurse I am proud to be today. A nurse who always puts her patients first, who will always advocate for others who require it and who strives to improve the lived experience of those I am privileged to work with and for.
