  • Neuroscience patients include those undergoing Electroencephalogram (EGG) studies, acute neuro-rehabilitation to the point of being clinically stable enough to be transferred to a longer stay facility, as well as long-stay neuro-rehab patients that often require 1:1 care.
  • Involvement in care of surgical patients that have had extensive surgeries, such as Wipples surgery - and ensuring their pain and nausea is appropriately managed and that they are empowered to meet their post-operative targets adequately.

Neuro-Admissions Staff Nurse

  • 3-month rotation as a Staff Nurse on a 31-bed, short stay admissions ward for patients having elective brain or spinal surgeries (Murray Falconer).
  • The pre-operative management of patients included introducing and orientating patients to the unit, conducting baseline vitals and obtaining bloods in order to see their baseline biochemistry, clotting and renal profile, as well as cross-matching for the blood group, should incase a blood transfusion is required.
  • Pre-op management at times also included the administration of surgery-specific medication such as Gliolan for craniotomies, and managing its side effects appropriately (notably photophobia in patients for up to 24 hours post-administration).
  • Post-operative management required strict vital monitoring, as often as 30-minute intervals, to ensure cardiovascular and neurological stability post-surgery.
  • Neuro observations are performed 30 minutes to 1 hour in post-operative patients, and 4 hourly in pre-operative or clinically stable patients.
  • The assessment of motor function, power and sensation is also required of staff to assess in all patients, especially in patients that have had spinal surgeries such as laminectomies or spinal decompressions.
  • This role also encouraged the liaising between different members of the multidisciplinary team, whether that be the pharmacists in regards to specialised medications, the physiotherapists in regards to neurorehabilitation, the medical team in regards to what the clinical plan is for the patient moving forward, and most importantly, with the patient, to ensure that they are informed about and involved in the decisions regarding their care.
