Personal statement

I am a Senior nurse with many transferable skills. My career as an adult nurse has been shaped by a deep commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence‑based care to patients and families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. With extensive experience in oncology and palliative care, I have developed a strong clinical foundation, advanced assessment skills, and a holistic approach that prioritises dignity, autonomy, and personalised support.

Working within oncology services has strengthened my ability to manage complex symptoms, coordinate multidisciplinary care, and support patients through challenging treatment pathways. I have become adept at recognising subtle changes in clinical presentation, advocating for timely interventions, and ensuring that care plans remain responsive to evolving needs. My experience has also reinforced the importance of clear communication, shared decision‑making, and building trusting relationships with patients and their families.

My palliative care background has profoundly shaped my professional identity. I have learned to balance clinical expertise with emotional intelligence, offering comfort, guidance, and stability during end‑of‑life transitions. I am confident in delivering sensitive conversations, supporting advance care planning, and working collaboratively with wider teams to ensure seamless, person‑centred care. This work has strengthened my resilience, empathy, and ability to remain calm and focused in high‑pressure environments.

My critical care experience further enhanced my ability to work confidently in high‑acuity environments, where rapid assessment, prioritisation, and decisive action are essential. I am skilled in managing unstable patients, interpreting complex clinical data, and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe and effective interventions. This experience has reinforced my ability to remain calm under pressure, lead by example, and maintain high standards of care even in fast‑paced, unpredictable situations.

As a senior nurse, I am committed to fostering a culture of learning, safety, and continuous improvement. I actively support junior colleagues through mentorship, supervision, and role‑modelling professional values. I am confident in leading shifts, managing caseloads, and contributing to service development initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and staff wellbeing.
