Summary

While working both as a band 5 and band 6 staff nurse I have acquired and developed a wide range of effective interpersonal and clinical skills. I have excellent communication skills, listening carefully to both parents and staff in relation to their concerns and opinions surrounding the child or infant being cared for. I always ensure that this information is dealt with accordingly but also that the person providing the information or expressing the concern feels respected, supported and that their individual needs are met. I provide mentorship and preceptorship to students and new staff, to ensure they develop the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve their goals, and to become safe effective practitioners, providing the highest standard of care to every patient. I work closely with the parents of the infants I care for, teaching and providing support to allow them to be as involved in their babies care as possible allowing them to regain some of the perceived lack of control. At all times I aspire to set an example to others by ensuring my practice is up to date. I have completed the Enhanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner course at Queens University (2022/2023), and also the NLS course (2023) ensures that the care which I provide is of a high standard, aligning myself at all times within the NMC code of conduct, and NICE guidelines. I am competent in using a number of different medical computer programs including EPIC. During my career, both as a staff nurse and also when I worked within the education system, I have developed skills in emotional perception and communication, often taking on non-verbal cues both from parents within Neonatal, and pupils with emotional and behavioural issues within Loughshore ERC. I have taken charge of both PICU and Neonatal, during these times I believe I have supported colleagues well and ensured the safety and care of the patients were met. I work well within the Multidisciplinary Team, communicating appropriate and relevant information during ward rounds and also discussing concerns or improvements to the relevant specialty. I am confident in offering my own clinical judgement and will offer relevant suggestions in regards to further management of patients. When working in the transitional care area in the postnatal ward as part of my NICU role, I provide advice and support to the midwives and also the junior doctors and GP trainees who I am working with, I feel that this is a vital attribute as it allows them to feel supported and enabled to care for patients within the this area. While working for Proparamedics, I regularly carried out nurse lead transfers, where I was the senior member of the team. I provided support to the crew involved and ensured that patients were transferred safely. While working both in PICU and NICU, I developed a wide range of clinical skills, for example; bloodletting, urinalysis, measuring and monitoring vital sign, caring for infants who had been trached at birth, many of whom required long term ventilation due to congenital abnormalities or birth defects; cardiac babies both pre and post op; and surgical infants. Throughout all areas of career I believe I have provided a high standard of patient focused and individualised care, and always strive to provide for my patients in a caring, respectful manner ensuring their needs are met first and foremost.
