Within this role, I undertake duties such as preparing instruments for the list I am allocated to, prepping the theatre ready for the list ahead, liaising with surgeons regarding any specific equipment that may be required, circulating for scrub team for all specialties (mainly orthopaedics) including retrieving of prosthesis/metal work requested by surgeons intra-operatively and collecting and opening specific sterile equipment before and during a case. Occasionally liaise with reps for procedures we use specialist equipment for, requesting them to attend the case or for advice. I also undertake reception duties including requesting patients from surgical admissions or from a ward, checking them into the department, liaising with the surgical teams regarding the order of lists or any issues with patients that need resolving and attending to them accordingly. I liaise with patient's families making sure they feel at ease and answer any questions they in a friendly but professional manner always adhering to trust policies. I also keep theatre staff informed of changes to the patients needs or changes to the next case being undertaken. I mentor new starters which includes assisting them to familiarize themselves with the department, work through their workbook, overseeing them complete tasks assigned to them effectively and in a time effective manner and report back to our PDN on progress being made.
