Skills

  • Communication & Networking – Alongside my research, I presented data produced during my project as a poster at the Microbiology Society Conference 2024 in Edinburgh I was approached by the Editor in Chief of the Microbiology Today (Microbiology Society) and asked to write an article about my project
  • Data Analysis & Computer Skills - During my role as a laboratory technician, undergraduate student and postgraduate, I have had extensive experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and I have used IBM SPSS and GraphPad Prism for statistical analysis of raw data
  • Timekeeping & Organisation – During my dissertation project/MSc research, I produced Gantt charts in order to manage time and meet short-term deadlines for the completion of assays Using OneNote to keep track of methods, results, and figures
  • Writing – I have produced quality writing pieces throughout my undergraduate degree and during my postgraduate research period My poster and presentation during the Microbiology Society conference 2024 were successful

Laboratory Experience

  • Microbiological Assays – Experience with numerous assays and techniques such as disc diffusion, tine-kill kinetics, multiple antibiofilm procedures, SEM imaging preparation, Gram staining, wound modelling. These assays have facilitated me to become competent with using autoclaves, pipettes, digital callipers, CDC biofilm reactors, Sonicators. I am also comfortable with the common necessities of a microbiology laboratory, such as, pouring agar plates, producing streak plates, creating bacterial lawns, serial dilutions, producing cultures of a specific optical density.
  • RT-qPCR – DNA and RNA extractions of both bacterial and viral samples. Experience with reverse transcriptase reaction, use of the thermocycler, operating liquid handling system/automated pipetting robot, interpretation of data using melt curves for both diagnostic work and research. As well as working in a class II biohazard hood with covid-19 samples.
  • Cell Biology– Experience culturing HEP G2 and HCAT cell lines and performing cytotoxicity evaluation of various compounds.
  • Chemistry – Phytochemical profiling of natural product extracts, giving me experience in making reagents and measuring/altering pH. LC-MS and interpretation will be completed prior to completion of MSc.
