Boxed Events is an events company who cater and coordinate events of all kinds across Cambridge. Such Events range from intimate and formal dinner parties to weddings, conferences and my biggest event being a 6 six course sit down meal for Cambridge University: Magdalene College's May ball.
The length and intensity of jobs would differ from four day wedding weekends to 9-5 business conferences. Event coordination is a passion of mine because I love to see an event come together after months (sometimes years!) of preparation. Seeing a bride and groom so happy at the end of their wedding day is a huge rewarding factor of why I love this job so much.
Throughout the years, we have held some fantastic events including weekly sit down meals for the Cambridge Union debate society where we would have famous guests from all over the world dining.
This role is a huge level of responsibility as you are the main point of contact for guests, suppliers, our own team of staff and most importantly the hosts of the events. Strong communication skills and good co ordiantion is essential to being successful.
CLAC is a residential summer school run over two weeks for international students across the world. The responsibilities of this role include creating fun, engaging and effective lessons plans for students at an intermediate level. Additionally, there was an expectation to construct weekly tests to asses students’ progress. Aside from teaching there was an expectation to share a role in residential care for students. including personalised workshops (I chose filmmaking and journalism!) involvement in evening activities and bed time routines. at the end of the two weeks, teachers completed personal reports for each of the students.
As a part of my role as Academic support manager I held the responsibility of teaching, running the social programme and being apart of academic development and support. A big part of this was managing the social programme which meant creating fun activities for the students each week. As this was an international school a main focus was taking into the consideration the spectrum of ethinicity, religion and age. This meant I would have to be confident in running social activities with new students each week and ensure they felt content in their new home of Cambridge.
From the academic point of view, I taught 5.5 hours each day and on two days of the week held study clubs focusing on particular skills such as applying to jobs and understanding British slang. A personal highlight was a workshop I created based on language to empower women. Holding this workshop with women from all across the world and spanning all ages was wonderful.
Through this role, my organisation and time coordiantion strengthed significantly as I had to balance the variation of tasks on a daily basis. Additionally, this was my first role as a part of a mangerial team therefore I learnt how to be a succesful part of a team to improve the social and academic development of the school.
I thoroughly enjoy working with people and so this job was a great fit.
Kaplan international have monthly surverys for when students leave in turn each school across the country is ranked comparitivley based on a multitude of factos (accomdation, academic support etc). When I joined Kaplan Cambridge they were the lowest ranking school for social programme at the end of my six months we became the highest ranked social programme in the country. This was huge proffesional achievement for me.
Mocha mania is a festival caterer who run multiple food trucks and coffee shops at festivals across the country. My role was to create rotas for the team, lead each shift either front of house, as a Barista or in the kitchen and ensuring the cafes were fully stocked.
The dominant skills in this role are resilience, self-motivation and the ability to think on your feet. It is often extremely busy and can move at a very fast pace for a sustained period during the event. This has built my skills to be adaptable to a fast and sometimes challenging pace of work.
Online GCSE English tutor.
Love and serve is a volunteer run centre in Athens which supports refugees from all over the world. For this role I had three classes per day between Monday and Wednesday, across three ages groups.
There was a huge amount of responsibility for this job, and I shortly took on the role of lead teacher for each of my classes. Designing appropriate lessons for a variety of age ranges, abilities and native languages was a challenge! But incredibly rewarding and it was so great to see my students progress and become more confident over the six weeks. On Thursdays and Fridays, we would run distribution which involved sorting and handing out essentials to the registered families. This was the most honourable experience and I learnt so much from it.
