I am a motivated individual who wishes to gain experience and a career within the plumbing industry.
I am currently attending Dumfries and Galloway College studying my pre apprenticeship plumbing programme, which I am thoroughly enjoying and feel I have gained an excellent grasp of the fundamental skills.
Through my time at college I have learned the importance of health and safety in the work place, enabling personal and team safety and the safe completion of tasks.
I am confidently able to prepare and secure bathroom and kitchen basins and utilities, having gained knowledge in pipework, plumbing systems, the use of a variety of fittings and techniques. Such as soldering, compression fittings always managing machinery effectively and safely. Alongside this we have worked through the implementation of drainage systems, hot and cold water systems and are beginning a unit of heating systems this term.
I am a conscience and determined individual and strive to do my best in both an educational and employment environment.
My previous employment was at the Anchor hotel for 2 years, where I worked as a kitchen porter. This was a highly pressured environment, where I had to work efficiently in the team to ensure punctual completion of meal preparation and service. I am able to work effectively within a face paced environment and prioritise tasks. I worked late nights, long days and weekends to meet the needs of the hospitality industry.
Previous experience in the forestry; punctuality was paramount due to the 6am starts. In this role I learned time management skills, close teamwork as well as showing the initiative to work independently. Tasks within the forestry were variable due to weather and ground conditions. Risk assessments daily to assess appropriate working conditions and safe working environment, therefore I had to be adaptable, gaining skills in planting, fencing, beating and forestry clearance.
I am a conscientious and determined individual and strive to do my best in both an educational and employment environment
Although I am only 16 years of age (17 in July) I have been in constant employment from 14 years old I have been in full time education as well as being employed in hospitality and latterly in the forestry industry Within these employments i have gained a range of skills and attributes through my work experience, these have allowed me to work within an adult setting building relations and communication skills
I feel my time at school has built self-resilience and this was demonstrated in the achievement of my National 5’s I achieved the required qualifications to facilitate my place at college; this was regardless of a very late diagnosis of dyslexia (diagnosed after my exam results were issued) At this time I found it challenging the way in which academic work was taught in school, however i was determined to succeed I know that through determination and hard work I am able to complete academic work however it was at this time that I recognised that practical skills is where I excel, I feel my experience of plumbing at college has highlighted this further for me and has enable a period of growth in my practical skills
