My experience as a traffic controller was very good, the hours were very long but it it helped me become more disciplined and more patient.
I learned a variety of skills that were essential to effectively perform my role to a good standard. Here's a description of the skills I acquired from my experience.
Communication: Being a traffic controller required clear and concise communication skills. I learned to give verbal instructions and hand signals in a confident and assertive manner, ensuring that drivers understood and followed my directions. Effective communication helped me maintain control over the flow of traffic and prevent accidents.
Decision making: In the fast paced environment of traffic control, quick decision making was crucial. I learned to assess situations rapidly and make split-second judgments on how to best manage traffic flow, particularly during unexpected events or emergencies. Making quick decisions helped maintain safety and efficiency on the roads.
Patience and Calmness: Dealing with frustrated or impatient drivers could be challenging, but I learned to remain patient and composed in such situations. I understood the importance of staying calm, defusing tensions, and reassuring drivers that their safety was the top priority.
Teamwork and Coordination: Traffic control often involved working as part of a larger construction crew or alongside other traffic controllers. I honed my teamwork and coordination skills by effectively communicating with colleagues, sharing information, and synchronizing our efforts to ensure seamless traffic management.
