Department Of Acute Medicine

Currently shadowing in the acute medicine unit. Learning the basics of medical clerking, ward rounds, and getting hands-on Cerner system.

This experience introduced me to various aspects of working in the NHS, including evidence-based practice, IT systems, MDT meetings, and clinical governance.

Department of Medicine

I attended a three-week attachment program at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in the Internal Medicine Department. This experience introduced me to various aspects of working in the US Medical system. Interacting with patients, taking histories, and shadowing the clinical lead with residents. It also exposed me to evidence-based practice, IT systems, MDT meetings, and clinical governance.

Department of Neonatal ICU and Pediatrics

Worked full time in the Neonatal ICU. Performed duties in the High Dependency Unit, Ward, and OPD. Liaised with other specialties for referrals and advice. Learned a variety of medical procedures, including exchange transfusions, CVP lines, and intubations. Participated in neonatal cardiac arrest calls. Wrote discharge summaries, updated treatment charts, and performed inpatient care duties. Participated in ward rounds and took part in case presentations.

Department of Medicine and Allied

I worked full-time in the Medical Unit. Performed duties in the High Dependency Unit, Ward, and OPD. Liaised with other specialties for referrals and advice. Learned a variety of medical procedures, including Ascitic taps, pleurocentesis, and Lumbar punctures. Participated in cardiac arrest calls. Wrote discharge summaries, updated treatment charts, and performed inpatient care duties. Participated in ward rounds and took part in case presentations.

Department of Surgery and Allied

I worked full-time General Surgery Unit. Carried out inpatient ward duties. Performed and assisted basic surgical procedures including suturing, wound debridement, and incision & drainage in emergency theatres. Observed and assisted multiple surgical procedures in the main operating theatres. Presented cases in ward rounds.

Department of Pediatric Medicine

Provided inpatient and outpatient care for neonates, infants, and children under the supervision of senior clinicians. Performed routine assessments, physical examinations, and monitored vital signs and growth parameters. Assisted in the management of common paediatric conditions such as pneumonia, bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, neonatal jaundice, and febrile seizures. Participated in neonatal resuscitations and assisted in procedures like lumbar punctures, IV cannulations, exchange transfusions, and blood sampling.

Department of Pediatric Surgery

Assisted in the perioperative management of paediatric patients with surgical conditions, including congenital anomalies and abdominal emergencies. Observed and assisted in a wide range of surgical procedures such as herniotomies, pyloromyotomies, appendectomies, and colostomies.

Conducted pre-operative evaluations and participated in post-operative care, including wound care, pain management, and monitoring for complications.

Performed minor procedures under supervision, including dressing changes, suture removal, and insertion of urinary catheters and nasogastric tubes.

Took part in daily ward rounds, clinical audits, and teaching sessions within the department.
