Summary

It took me a long time to move to the emergency department from my comfort zone of the ward due to my confidence and believed that I didn't have the knowledge or skill set to be good enough .

However since taking the plunge to be a band 5 I have learnt so much about myself, I have grew in confidence and I really have a passion for my job , I love what I do and I feel like I'm ready for a different challenge as a band 6 and want to give staff, new starters to the department the experience that I have had.

Work history

  • I currently work in the Emergency Department at queen Alexandra Hospital which is one of the busiest departments on the south coast, what I have realised is my passion for emergency care.
  • I started in the department in January 2020 and had to be redeployed due to being pregnant in a non clinical role , after my maternity leave I came back to the department in February 2022 .
  • My role varies involving triage, ambulance streaming , escalating deteriorating patients, administering medications.
  • working alongside the multi-disaplinary team including consultants , specialist doctors , mental health, safeguarding to optimise patient care and make collaborative decisions to make the patient journey more efficient and with the aim to get them seen by the right speciality.
  • However fundamentally I believe my role is to give good care for patients whether they are in the department for minor illness, a life threatening emergency or end of life care . whether that involves pain relief , emotional/mental support or something as simple as a cup of tea.

  • I worked in the cardiology department since becoming a newly qualified nurse.
  • The role involved looking after patients following procedures/ management of their heart conditions escalating to the cardiology team of any deterioration and being involved in cardiac arrests and their management .
  • By the end of my time on cardiology I ran the 36 bedded ward which enabled me to learn how to manage staff , problem solve and ensure the safety of the patients on the ward .
  • As I worked predominately night shifts I would have to run the cardiac arrests before the cardiology team and hospital at night team arrived.
