  • My hobby centres around two passions: writing books and driving my car and motorbike. Writing allows me to explore my imagination and creativity. I enjoy crafting stories, developing characters, and weaving intricate plots that captivate readers. Each book is a journey in itself, not just for my audience but for me as well, as I delve into different genres and styles. The process of putting pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—provides a sense of fulfilment and joy that is hard to rival. On the other hand, driving my car and motorbike offers a thrilling sense of freedom and adventure. Whether it's a leisurely ride through the countryside or navigating winding roads, the exhilaration of being on the open road invigorates me. Each journey presents an opportunity to explore new places or simply enjoy the sensation of the wind against my face. The combination of speed, skill, and exploration makes driving a perfect complement to my quieter pursuit of writing. Together, these hobbies form a fulfilling balance in my life, allowing me to express myself creatively while also satisfying my adventurous spirit.

Accomplishments

Letter from Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer on Harry Tangye's retirement from the police.

I write enclosing your Certificate of Service and wish to take this opportunity to thank you, your family and loved ones for your contribution to policing. You have served across the force area, often within some of the most challenging commands. You have always sought to serve others to the best of your ability and have taken a leadership role way beyond that associated with rank alone. Your leadership goes across more than our geography, reaching into the national and international. Few colleagues within UK policing have had such reach and influence. In the operational context, you have been one of the most accomplished of your generation. In your supervisory role, you have been professional, compassionate and operated with great clarity of purpose. There are so many aspects to your career one could comment upon. I refer briefly to two aspects, one of which is the Honest Truth campaign, which has been instrumental in changing attitudes and saving lives. In that campaign you have worked so closely with your friends and colleagues and partners, earning their respect. Your compassion and care has been evident throughout, which mirrors your own approach in managing and supporting colleagues. Your professionalism is also mirrored in the less public aspects of your role, relating to protection and the many sensitive operations undertaken alongside your more overt role. Policing has benefited from your leadership in the digital and social media space and, on occasion, this has been at personal cost. You have shown great presence of mind and a willingness to speak truth unto power during your endeavour to represent the frontline and the reality of its challenges. Sometimes it has also caused you to set out to the public how their perceptions and beliefs also need challenge. This, amongst so many things in your career, leaves an enduring legacy. In our many conversations I have always reflected on the outward confidence of yourself and yet the undoubted humility that you possess. You are always willing to comment on the contribution and success of your colleagues. The importance of your family and loved ones has been clear to me and therefore, your achievements could not have been delivered without their support. My very best wishes wherever your journey takes you next.

Yours sincerely,

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer
