Community Drug and Alcohol Treatment.

Sixteen years experience as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Practitioner and Team Leader specialising in criminal justice service provisions. Significant experience in multi-agency working and co-production accompanied by the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and meet key performance indicators. Highly experienced in delivering client-focused structured interventions, and assessments whilst supporting vulnerable and marginalised people. Good knowledge of engagement/treatment techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing and trauma-informed practice.

Research and Academia

Highly adaptable, committed and passionate social science PhD graduate (2024) with broad knowledge beyond drug use specialism. A qualitative researcher at heart with a keen interest in hard-to-reach, vulnerable and marginalised populations. Particular interest in Chicago School symbolic interactionism, labelling theory, interviewing and ethnography. Yet, open-minded and equipped with a good understanding of quantitative methodologies and the ability to synthesise quantitative research findings with qualitative data. A passionate advocate for social justice with a particular interest in repeal of the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971).

Criminal Justice Team Leader (substance use)

Following the publication of Black's (2021) Independent Review of Drugs additional funding (AF) was made available to drug and alcohol services.

  • Promoted to take responsibility for leading the new countywide Criminal Justice Intervention Team (CJIT) upon receipt of AF.
  • Line management of six of the nine team members deployed across Suffolk.
  • Ensuring that all decisions and service provisions are consistently client-focused and relevant to the locality.
  • Direct responsibility for ensuring the day-to-day activities of the CJIT run smoothly across Suffolk.
  • Handling multiple competing priorities and providing swift resolutions to time-sensitive issues.
  • Responsible for managing the partnership relationship with The Probation Service in the delivery and monitoring of drug rehabilitation requirements (DRR) and alcohol treatment requirements (ATR) across Suffolk.
  • Direct responsibility for management of the Integrated Offender Management (IOM) partnership with Suffolk Constabulary and The Probation Service.
  • Direct responsibility for ongoing development of in-custody drug treatment provisions and conditional cautions in unison with Suffolk Constabulary.
  • Dealing with challenging situations (including violent behaviour).
  • Handling large volumes of secure emails daily and prioritising responses based on urgency and need.
  • Investigating client deaths and compiling high-quality reports.
  • Policy compliance audits and monitoring of a multitude of key performance indicators based on both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Handling Subject Access Requests (SAR) per data protection legislation and organisational policy.
  • Contribute to management meetings, performance reviews and deputising for the Criminal Justice Team Manager.
  • Monitoring funding applications for residential rehabilitation - an activity remarkedly similar to bid writing.
  • Representing Turning Point in media interviews.

Criminal Justice Recovery Worker

Responsible for the delivery of:

  • Assessment and treatment of individuals with drug and alcohol support needs leaving prison.
  • Case management and delivery of interventions based on cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing and trauma-informed practice.
  • In custody work including assessments, one-to-one sessions, facilitation of methadone and buprenorphine prescription continuance.
  • Harm minimisation interventions (needle exchange), Naloxone training/patient group directive dispensing (prescription not required).
  • Managing a caseload of 50 individuals with complex drug/alcohol support needs and frequent contact with the criminal justice system.
  • Care planning and risk assessing.
  • Managing safeguarding cases in unison with social services.
  • Delivery and management of offenders sentenced to Drug Rehabilitation Requirements (DRR) and Alcohol Treatment Requirements (ATR).
  • Liaison with partners including the courts, prison, probation service and Suffolk Constabulary.
  • By request contributed to Suffolk Constabulary Officer and Staff recruitment and ongoing career development training (custody sergeant's redeployment).
  • Working closely with Suffolk Constabulary Drugs Liaison Officer to further develop in-custody drug and alcohol services provisions.
  • Gave evidence before the Coroner.

Promoted to directly manage and develop the Drug Testing on Arrest (DTOA) provision.

  • Implement robust reporting and data-sharing protocols that remain unchanged to this day.
  • Line management of 3-4 Drug Intervention Workers of varying abilities and experience.
  • Resolution of staffing issues in unison with human resources department.
  • Attending and significantly contributing to multi-agency meetings at the management/strategic level including commissioners (Suffolk County Council) and other critical stakeholders most notably Suffolk Constabulary.
  • Contributing to tender submission.
  • Developed a reputation as an authority on DTOA that remains to this day.

Assessment of individuals presenting with complex drug and alcohol support needs many of whom were in frequent contact with the criminal justice system. Duties included:

  • Drug Test on Arrest (DTOA) Required Assessments under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and Drugs Act 2005.
  • Submission of MG11 witness statements in non-compliant cases and attendance at court in cases of not-guilty pleas.
  • Cell sweeps to identify other detainees with drug and alcohol support needs.
  • Onward referrals to structured drug treatment, mental health, primary care (GP's) and housing providers.
  • Liaison with the in-custody medic, police staff, officers and controlled drugs liaison officer (CDLO).

Case management of 50 to 70 individuals presenting with long-term class A drug dependency issues (heroin, crack cocaine), health, mental health and social care needs. Specific responsibilities included:

  • Harm minimisation work including needle exchange.
  • Management of satellite outreach service (Sudbury Suffolk)
  • Management of client opiate substitution medications (Methadone, Buprenorphine, Suboxone)
  • Care planning, psycho-social interventions, risk assessment, mitigation and management.
  • Involvement with complex child safeguarding proceedings in unison with Children and Young Persons Services (CYPS). Attended and gave evidence before the Family Court.

Accomplishments

    National Winner of Turning Points 'Inspired by Possibility Award' (2022) for outstanding contribution to Suffolk's new criminal justice service provision. Over 500 people are nominated for these awards annually from which around 10 winners are selected across Turning Point's varied services.

  • Hobbies include collecting vintage steam engine models, modern history (particularly the 'Cold War), car maintenance, DIY and spending time with my familiy and friends.
