Sterile Services Technician

Stoke Mandeville Hospital NHS Trust

  • The processing starts the moment the surgical instruments return from the theatres. The surgical sets are checked by my team for missing and damaged instruments. If any of these problems occur, a non-conformity form is being raised and passed through me. I must conduct a thorough investigation and document all relevant information to the issues concerned. Then, I must inform the production manager and the theatre manager, through email and provide a hard copy file of the report about whether the issue has been resolved or not. Next is the plan of action having to be taken into place so that the issue will be avoided in the future. The same procedure is done with single pack instruments. After which, the surgical sets are sent through the HAMO, a washer for cleaning and disinfection. It takes 45-50 minutes for the whole cycle to finish. When done, the surgical sets are then checked and prepared according to the specification sheet provided. The surgical sets are enveloped wrapped into a sterilization paper and autoclave for 35 minutes. Once finished the surgical sets are left in the dispatch store for cooling down and ready to be put away back to the theatres and respected wards. In the absence of the supervisor, I am tasked to be in charge all the time by our production manager.
