Since childhood I have had a fascination for the natural world, its origins, morphology, ecology and how the geography and the geology determine that which survives & thrives on the surface. Inspired by natural history programmes and fell walks with my father, who was a teacher of the Earth Sciences, it was inevitable that I would pursue a career in Biology.
My Applied Biology degree course at Bath University gave me the opportunity to become conversant with the skills needed to be able to research, plan & deliver projects & to understand and solve problems. I wanted to pursue a career in the life sciences, in particular river management. Alas just as I qualified the recession of the late seventies decimated opportunities for environment-based employment. With house prices soaring I needed to establish myself in the world of work, hence my decision to enter the world of education. Family life demanded a steady income, and teaching was an activity which I was able to develop many transferable skills which have given variety & enrichment to my working life.
Through my involvement in the community, especially with regard to sport & rugby in particular, I have diversified the range of my abilities, which in return has enabled me to be more confident in taking on new challenges. Being an advocate for developments being on a human scale and with due deference to their location, I have an eye for aesthetically pleasing architecture, which pleases me greatly when I see good design being delivered, but sadly some annoyance and occasional despair when poor planning is presented. This I believe will be a useful asset in the skill set of the successful candidate. In addition, I have highlighted in the resume of my CV where my experiences would well place me to understand the needs & views of stakeholders partaking in proposed projects. A more complete CV is available on request which due to the many years it covers, the information cannot be included in the available space.
