Crew Commander

In the role of Crew commander at Peterhead Fire Station , I am firstly responsible for the safety and welfare of my crew. This not only relates to incidents but also on station on a daily basis during training events and during regular maintenance of equipment. Out with incidents I am responsible for ensuring all equipment is maintained and in safe working order, Ensuring all crew members have the required PPE and that it is inspected regularly. Any failings with PPE are recorded and dealt with immediately. I am also responsible for ensuring all the watch are made aware of changes to policies, procedures , urgent instructions or any other safety critical information received from the service and that it is understood. I ensure all of this is recorded on each member of staffs PDR . I am responsible for organising our quarterly watch based training, This is done by reviewing PDR and planning accordingly. Throughout the quarter I will hold regular meetings with my watch commander to ensure we are on track for completion. I involve our RDS colleagues when planning on and off station training to ensure as much people benefit from the training events. I support my watch to deliver quarterly targets such as community engagement and O.I inspections. I ensure all information collated from these events are logged appropriately and any action required from these are dealt with promptly and all relevant people are informed of this. Within my role of temporary crew commander I oversee the trainee on our watch ensuring his SVQ portfolio is progressing in a timely manner.

In the role of RDS Crew commander, I am firstly responsible for the safety and welfare of my crew when attending emergency Incidents and also during routine maintenance and training activities both on and off station. Out with incidents I am responsible for ensuring all equipment is maintained and in safe working order, training is planned and carried out as per the service training calendar and this is reflected on PDR. I am also responsible for ensuring all staff are made aware of any changes to procedures or policies that may impact them and also to make everyone aware of any urgent instructions or other safety critical information is passed, understood, recorded and logged on PDR. In my time as a Crew Commander I have been OIC at a variety of incidents and have also been involved in sector commander duties and also dealing with incidents through training exercises. These training exercises have involved our whole time colleagues and also meant I was debriefed by experienced managers who were able to assist in my development. I am proactive in training during allocated drill nights for my RDS crew, this involves delivering technical inputs along with leading practical exercises and other scenario based training. I also take the lead at station to organise community events and home fire safety visits. Community events are ran alongside the services thermatic action plan to ensure the information provided to the public is relevant and accurate for the time of year.

I am a member of the Scottish fire and Rescue service and serve the public of Scotland and protect my local community through education and partnership working. it is my responsibility to ensure l am fit and ready for duty at all times and because of this I ensure keep up a suitable level of fitness and ensure my keep my knowledge and skills up to date, this is both via online learning, reading policies and procedures and finally practical training. I make sure that my PPE and equipment is in a state of good repair and readiness for use. I have experienced and been exposed to many different types of incidents and have always taken something away that I can personally improve on or learn something from. Educating and engaging within local community groups, schools or industries to ensure fire safety advice is passed on to the best of my ability.
