Asked to return to an operational role by the Board so as to provide a solid financial structure to the business unit prior to the introduction of a significant amount of new business that trebled the turnover for the site. This included the financial management of £40m of investment in buildings, plant and machinery and ensuring that the site management team had adequate operational and financial controls in place so as to support the phased ramp up of new business.


  • Financial responsibility for the business unit reporting to the UK and Canadian senior management teams - monthly reporting, budgeting and forecasting.
  • Working capital and cash management.
  • Member of the operational management team and lead for financial and non-financial reporting.
  • Managing costing and pricing data for 100+ new part numbers across a number of product lines.
  • Ensuring that adequate financial controls were in place as the business unit's turnover increased to +£150m.

Following on from my time as a contractor, I was asked to return to Stadco to support the business with a number of new business opportunities, to support a re-financing exercise and also to ensure that the financial reporting systems were developed in readiness for disposal.

  • Liaising with banks and advisers to support the re-financing of the business.

  • Collation and consolidation of all financial and non-financial information required for a Data Room.

Acertec Construction Products Limited (ACPL) consisted of six reporting units (four operational units). ACPL was the holding company for the four operating units that were previously part of British Reinforced Concrete Limited.


I was appointed Finance Director with full responsibility for all financial aspects and functions of the business.


  • Introduced clarity and consistency to monthly reporting and forecasting.
  • Introduced controls and improvement of working capital management and cash management within the businesses.
  • Participated in strategic and operational reviews of all the businesses, resulting in the closure of one of the businesses in May 2009.
  • Completed a detailed review of products, product profitability, markets and competitors and subsequent preparation of medium term business plans.
  • Liaising with Corporate Financial Advisers to prepare IMs, Data Rooms and Management Presentations to ready the three remaining businesses for sale, ultimately working with all the interested parties and advisers to complete the disposal of the businesses together with the preparation of Completion Accounts and handover of any legacy issues.

  • Responsible for all group financial reporting together with responsibility for completion of group statutory accounts and audit clearance.
  • Responsible for financial due diligence of a number of acquisitions and joint ventures including post acquisition systems review and subsequent implementation of group ERP systems and reporting requirements. This consisted of five acquisitions and four joint ventures with Japanese, Spanish and Dutch partners.
  • Supporting the acquisition of a major competitor in Germany, including a 6 month secondment to the business to implement reporting and control systems.
  • Leading investigations into loss making business units and product groups to identify main factors contributing to poor performance. Responsibility for producing analyses and recommendations to group board which led to restructuring and divestment activities.
  • Extensive involvement in costing and pricing activities, using both ABC and DCF techniques, prior to, during and after the tender/bidding process including direct involvement in major customer pricing negotiations.


I developed a finance function which was hands-on and was well integrated into the wider business with a good understanding of all business disciplines.
