Work history

Head of Recruitment Analysis

AFC Bournemouth
01.2023 - Current

A new role at the time set up with the main purpose of bringing together the use of data and video analysis within the department to further assist the recruitment process.

Achievements

  • Developed a player recruitment tool which was used on a daily basis by senior members of the recruitment department.
  • Developed and implemented processes for player ID, player recruitment videos, player dossiers and head coach dossiers.
  • Successfully migrated all recruitment staff to a new scouting platform following 15 plus years on original platform. This involved developing new scout report templates which are aligned with senior reports and recruitment videos.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with Technical director and senior scouts to understand the needs regarding player recruitment and guide the department in order to support these needs.
  • Run a detailed player recruitment process aligning recruitment analysis with scouting.
  • Lead and coordinate the production of various types of player videos for recruitment. Assisting with the production of full player analysis videos. Adding telestrations, banners and slides to clips to aid understanding.
  • Producing player philosophy videos to be used in player meetings when trying to recruit. These videos are to show potential new signings our philosophy and demonstrate how each player aligns with this. These videos are often crucial in convincing players to join AFC Bournemouth.
  • Educate and constantly liaise with scouts to ensure quality of their videos is of the level required.
  • Oversee general running of the department in terms of negotiating contracts with data providers and any other external consultants.
  • Lead the production and maintenance of club recruitment videos for potential new signings highlighting the coaching and player development within the club and providing a guide to the area.
  • Line manager for the recruitment analysis department. This involves identifying positions required, getting sign off for the new position, writing job descriptions, interviewing and coordinating the recruitment process.
  • Key relationships in this role are with the head of scouting operations, chief scout and technical director.
  • Line manager the recruitment analysis department. Give direction and focus to current staff and recruit and train new staff.

Head of Analysis

AFC Bournemouth
06.2012 - 01.2023

Achievements

  • Implementing various different types of software and hardware to take the department forward. We had a smooth transition from Amisco to Sportscode in our 2nd year in the Premier League. This also involved the entire coaching staff changing to Apple hardware. We added telestration software (Coach Paint) shortly after to compliment this but have since moved to Hudl Studio. We significantly improved our data visualisation by bringing in Tableau which is used extensively across all areas within the department.
  • Specialisation of the staffing within the department has been key to us being able to help drive performance forward. Roles included pre-match, post match in and out of possession, set plays, training, goalkeeping, data science and motivation.
  • We developed an effective and smooth running match-day process which allowed the department to communicate effectively with the coaching staff. A timesheet of when different checks and jobs had to be carried out was also produced and sent to each member of the department.
  • Creating links with universities who would provide us with interns to assist the department each season. Many of the interns have since been employed and still work at the club.

Responsibilities

  • My primary responsibility was pre-match analysis which involved working closely with the manager, coaches and other analysts to devise a game plan for each match.
  • Recruiting and training staff to deliver performance analysis support across first team and academy.
  • Ensuring alignment across first team and academy to assist player transitions to the first team.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships was key to ensure our department had what it needed to perform. The head of IT, general manager, chief executive, software providers and external contractors for example.
  • Exploring and testing new technology and hardware with an eye on the future and what direction the department needed to go.
