Throughout my professional journey, I have developed a comprehensive skill set that bridges educational support and psychological understanding. As a Supply Teaching Assistant and Educational Psychology Assistant (EPA), I have spent over a year supporting children and young people with diverse educational needs across mainstream and specialist provision schools in Plymouth.
My professional experience has been deeply rooted in special educational support, working extensively with children presenting complex needs including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and Down Syndrome. As an EPA, I applied an APDR (Assess, Plan, Do, Review) methodology, ensuring targeted and effective interventions. As a Supply Teaching Assistant, I now apply a much more generalised class-based approach, encouraging inclusion and well-being across all areas of the school day.
I am currently completing my BSc (Hons) in Psychology at the University of Plymouth, which provides a theoretical foundation for my practical work. This has been complemented by extensive continued professional development, including specialised training in areas such as Lego Therapy, Precision Teaching, PACE training, Grief Training, and Speech and Language interventions.
Parallel to my work in education, I have developed significant operational management skills through my role as Designated Premises Supervisor at HQ Bar. This position has refined my abilities in team leadership, conflict resolution, and high-pressure decision-making.
In this role, I am responsible for collecting and organising essential information to support the creation of Education, Health, and Care Plans. I then proofread and edit the reports written by an Educational Psychologist, ensuring they meet the highest standards of accuracy and clarity. My experience as an Educational Psychology Assistant allows me to bring a solid understanding of SEND, enabling me to ensure the reports align with all required expectations and guidelines.
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, I am using my experience and training as an Educational Psychology Assistant to provide more generalised classroom-based support across mainstream and Specialist Provision schools in Plymouth. I am responsible for delivering tailored 1-1 support, group interventions, class-based assistance, and various other provisions to encourage inclusion, engagement, and emotional well-being amongst a diverse age range.
As a Designated Premises Supervisor, I am responsible for managing day-to-day operations at HQ Bar, including opening/closing, stock intake, and training new staff members.
This role has allowed me to develop many skills such as working under pressure, problem-solving, conflict management, and maximizing the efficiency of a team.
As an EPA, I was responsible for offering tailored support to children and young people (CYP) across Plymouth. I worked as part of a Multi-Agency support team with various other professionals, such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Counselors/Therapists, and Family Learning Mentors.
My role consisted of adopting an APDR (Assess, Plan, Do, Review) approach, to ensure the children and young people (CYP) received the most effective support. I worked with a diverse range of needs, across all primary age groups. My caseload consisted of pupils with ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), and needs across all four areas of SEND.
I received monthly supervision from a Senior Practioner Educational Psychologist, alongside a plethora of CPD opportunities across the year (e.g., Lego Therapy, Precision Teaching, PACE, Grief Training, Speech and Language Training, Write Dance, ADHD Training, and many more).
This role highlighted many skills I already possessed; such as confidence, psychological knowledge, and the ability to apply knowledge to novel problems. It also allowed me to develop many other skills such as presenting skills, administrative work, and an understanding of the educational frameworks and policies in place across Plymouth
