I am driven by cultivating a culture of change, where those marginalised or less privileged get equitable opportunities to gain training and progress in their careers. My career in Medical Education started with my appointment as an SAS tutor in 2017. Since then I have done various roles within and outside the Trust including my current role as Associate Postgraduate Dean at NHS England (Midlands). I have learned a lot, which has been a steep learning curve. I sometimes suffer from imposter syndrome, but I make sure that I trust my skills, continue developing, do not let the artificial glass ceilings stop me and challenge myself to progress. I want to put myself forward for the role of Deputy Director of Postgraduate Medical Education. I have looked at the job description and have spoken to a few colleagues, I believe that not only do I have the skills to do the role, I have a passion to do it well with a deeper purpose.
In my various roles, which I have highlighted in the subsequent sections of my CV, I have always strived for excellence and opportunities for everyone. SAS workforce historically has been marginalised and not developed to the same extent as other medical workforce. They have faced bias and prejudice. I have engaged with all stakeholders at various stages of my career; locally, regionally, and nationally. Cultural change is difficult to bring, but I have shown perseverance and patience, to negotiate including having difficult conversations, taking emotions out of the equation, and focusing on a framework of quality improvement and national guidance. Benchmarking and being objective. Recognising that change will occur, not by force but by having allies, through buy-in, having shared goals and through the principle of mutual gain and understanding perspectives. Today, through the collective effort of everyone we see greater recognition of SAS doctors at all levels, still a lot to do but the direction of travel is correct.
I wish to bring the experience to this role of Deputy Director of Medical Education, particularly improving the training environment for the postgraduate doctors in training in the Division of Women and Children. I have worked with different frameworks and benchmarking tools such as the SAS Charter and feel that I could apply that learning through active engagement to address issues around training and the implementation of an Improvement Plan. In My Associate Postgraduate Dean role, I have engaged with other associate deans and heads of schools, I have developed a good understanding of issues with formal training and quality. I have collaborated with lead DME and Associate Dean for Quality and have done a pilot intervention visit to a Trust, for SAS doctors on the same principles of quality visits for trainees. We created an improvement plan from that visit and have monitored it through the SAS tutor.
To improve my skills as a leader and educator, I have done several leadership courses including one on behavioural sciences from the London School of Economics and Politics and healthcare leadership development from ASME. The interactions in these courses have allowed me to network with senior educationalists and have raised my awareness of the recent changes to the delivery of medical education and management structures. It has provided me with the skills to apply in terms of negotiating, influencing, inspiring, role modelling and at times assertiveness.
I look forward to this opportunity to support everyone - trainers and trainees and work collaboratively with everyone. I recognise that the role will bring challenges, and I am prepared to navigate through those challenges. I am aware of the supportive leadership and management in the medical education department, I have worked with them before, and I look forward to collaborating again.
