I was born in Edinburgh and moved to Falkirk when I was three.
Both my Aunt and Uncle have a background in accountancy. When I decided to follow in their footsteps, they told me I was mad, and that I should avoid doing so!
As I enjoy calculations, working with numbers and problem-solving, I thought it would be the perfect path to pursue.
I love to work with people as I am extremely outgoing and easy to talk to. Making friends has never been an issue for me.
I took on this role as a favour. The club was looking to fold if a new treasurer was not found, so I thought taking that responsibility would be a great experience and opportunity.
My role includes:
- Monthly bookkeeping and tracking the net flow of cash in the bank.
- Bank reconciliation to ensure bookkeeping is correct.
- Preparing accounts.
- Attending meetings and providing financial reports.
Recently, I attended the first AGM. When I was done presenting, I was shown appreciation for the vision I have for the club and the effort I am giving to help.
I started with no prior knowledge of accounting. In the summer of 2023, before I started my job, I studied from a textbook for a basic understanding of accountancy.
Since starting my graduate apprenticeship, I have had an array of first hand experiences and duties to carry out. This includes:
- Preparing annual accounts within given budgets. (I regularly prepare accounts from sole traders to limited companies)
- Preparing personal tax returns. (I have gained a good understanding of different tax reliefs and other tax-related matters, including dealing with investigations).
- Preparing VAT returns. (I am responsible for chasing client records and preparing most, if not all, of VAT returns for clients. Have a decent understanding of partial exemption, too).
- Preparing Corporation Tax Charges.
- Bookkeeping. (Certified advisor for both Xero and Quickbooks, the latter being an advanced certification. I bookkeep regularly and do so for a local sports club called Forth Valley Water Polo, of which I am the treasurer for almost a year).
- Preparing payroll. (Do so for clients either on a weekly or monthly basis. Have prepared payrolls for companies ranging from 2 employees to 15+ employees).
- Regularly communicating with clients.
- In charge of First Aid in the office. (I hold a First Aid certification at Scotland Level 6 - Scottish Higher equivalent).
- Constant planning of what work to be done and when to be done by - in accordance to deadlines etc.
- Quickbooks Advance Certification
- Xero Advisor
