I am a highly creative and intellectually curious person who loves learning and imparting new skills. I am passionately committed to arts education and work hard in my current role to inspire and encourage young people in their creative studies. I am confident to experiment and try new things and willing to learn.
In my current role, I manage the media and resources for around a thousand high-school students, maintain order in the studios, stock-take and source what is required as necessary. I enjoy the diversity of tasks in an Art Technician's job - everything from washing paint palettes to supporting A-Level students. I job-share, which requires teamworking and good communication skills.
My main creative output is in the field of textiles: as well as my creative projects, I enjoy mending and upcycling and am environmentally aware. I enjoy cooking, particularly making preserves and baking.
When my children were at primary school, I used to design and teach art workshops in their school to complement their academic projects. As a Trustee of the Betjeman Millennium Park in Wantage, I organised two "Art in the Park" events, at which teachers from King Alfred's and local artists led sessions in clay sculpture, printing and painting for Key Stage 2 and 3 students. I am now Chair of the Park and lead a team of six Trustees and a dozen volunteers to maintain this beautiful green space with a poetry sculpture trail in the heart of Wantage.
At King Alfred's Academy, I have designed and delivered several enrichment clubs for Key Stage 3 and 4 students, to develop their artistic and textile skills. I have supervised two EPQs for A Level students and invigilated and supported GCSE and A Level exams.
I have had the opportunity to curate and install exhibitions of student work at my local museum and library. I also co-created an installation to represent the school at a celebration of eco-friendly flower-arranging attended by the Queen's florist at the local church. Helping to create the set and props for our annual musical production is an exciting part of my year.
I have previously undertaken short courses in ceramics, life drawing, screen and block printing and silver clay jewellery making. I paint in oil, acrylic, watercolour and tempera and make lino prints. In my spare time, I attend art and textile exhibitions to educate myself and add to my mental library of ideas and techniques.
I come from an intensely artistic family and have been exposed to art all my life, although I chose to concentrate on academic studies at school and university. My English degree honed my analytical skills, which are an asset when supporting students with their annotations. My Textile Conservation studies helped me develop practical and intellectual skills that inform and enrich my practice as a technician.
I love to travel and visit places and objects of cultural significance, especially classical Greek and Roman sites and Renaissance art. I enjoy gardening and walking in the countryside. I am interested in history, architecture and the care of historic buildings and served on my local Neighbourhood Plan committee. I am interested in social issues and current affairs.
I enjoy DIY and have basic carpentry and decorating skills.
At King Alfred's, I support Art, Textiles and Graphics courses at GCSE and A Level. My duties include:
After I left my earlier role at the Ashmolean to have children, I was asked to work for the Museum again on an hourly basis to finalise the designs for the new textiles store in the redeveloped Eastern Art department. In this role, I used the data I had collected on the dimensions, condition and environmental requirements of the objects to work with a storage contractor to create modern, accessible and safe storage for the collection.
Once the store was installed, I worked with the Eastern Art Print Room supervisors to transfer the textiles from their temporary storage to their new, permanent store. I trained the Supervisors how to handle delicate textile objects, such as long, rolled pieces.
I was a project conservator, employed to survey the Eastern Art collections and design and commission new storage facilities for them. Alongside this work, I conserved textiles, installed displays and supported academic access to the Eastern Art collections. I also undertook to courier an Ashmolean artefact to a museum in Barcelona.
As the major Ashmolean redevelopment project got underway in 2004, I was given responsibility for managing the safe decanting of the collections from the old building into temporary storage, training and directing a team of packers. I worked with the IT team to design a database to record every object as it was packed, and with my fellow conservators to devise safe packing methods for complex and fragile objects.
I was employed to conserve historic textiles for the Museum's refurbished British Galleries. This involved assessing their condition, cleaning them as necessary, applying stitched or adhesive supports and preparing or mounting them for display. Objects I worked on included a wedding dress, bed hangings and various flat pieces. I assisted with installation and worked with mount-makers.
I worked alone and collaboratively to conserve a number of privately-owned textiles, including a tapestry and bed hangings made by May Morris from Kelmscott Manor. I assisted with re-display of several pieces.
I was employed on a short contract as part of a team working on location at Buckingham Palace conserving the Music Room carpet. This involved reinforcing the fragile carpet by stitching it to a new fabric support.
I took book orders by mail, fax, phone and in person. I collected books to fulfil these orders, which involved developing a comprehensive memory of the whereabouts and appearance of thousands of books. Dealing with customers who had often travelled across the world to visit the company required good interpersonal skills and patience.
I sold college merchandise to visitors to St Edmund Hall. This involved handling takings and stock control and answering visitors' enquiries about the college's history.
