- Weeks 1–2 – Client Interaction & Early Exposure
Sat in on client consultations for Wills and Lease negotiations, learning how to ask effective questions to elicit essential instructions.
Witnessed Will signings and observed professional formalities required for valid execution.
Reflection: Initially daunting to sit in on sensitive client meetings, but developed confidence by listening attentively and recognising the importance of empathy and precision in client care.
- Weeks 3–4 – Research & Casework Insight
Reviewed client correspondence with estate agents to identify potential claims.
Assisted in assessing whether leases were valid for particular business uses.
Observed itemisation of estates and valuation of assets, including a hands on visit to a farm for agricultural estate valuation.
Reflection: These tasks required meticulous attention to detail; I realised the value of persistence in legal analysis and learned to be resourceful when interpreting documents.
- Weeks 5–6 – Drafting Legal Documents
Drafted a Particulars of Claim form and a referral letter for medical negligence.
Prepared a letter to the Office of the Public Guardian and drafted terms & conditions for a business client.
Created a zero-hour employment contract and a service occupancy contract, navigating LexisNexis to ensure accuracy.
Reflection: Drafting was initially challenging, but I gained confidence by comparing precedents and understanding how precise wording carries legal effect.
- Weeks 7–8 – Expanding Legal Practice Skills
Created wills and lasting powers of attorney using LEAP Legal software.
Registered Trusts and created an Agricultural Tenancy.
Drafted a Tomlin Order, later used in an official capacity, and prepared a marriage settlement agreement for court submission.
Reflection: Handling increasingly complex drafting tasks boosted my sense of responsibility and reinforced the importance of accuracy under pressure.
- Weeks 9–10 –Commercial Insight
Witnessed out of court settlement negotiations and attended an estate auction, observing real world dispute resolution.
Visited the Registrar’s office with clients, gaining insight into procedural aspects of legal practice.
Drafted client facing documents in property and contract law matters, strengthening professional communication skills.
Reflection: These experiences showed the practical realities of legal practice beyond textbooks, giving me a sense of achievement as I was trusted with meaningful tasks rather than just administrative work.
