In my role as the Medical Officer at Barton Hill Academy, I provide comprehensive medical care and support to students, ensuring their physical health, safety, and well-being are prioritised throughout the school day. I assess and respond to a wide range of medical incidents, administering first aid, monitoring ongoing symptoms, and arranging hospital transfers when required. I maintain direct communication with parents or guardians, ensuring students receive timely care and are collected when necessary.
I have specialist responsibilities for students with complex and ongoing medical needs. This includes administering emergency medication to students with epilepsy, managing blood sugar levels for students with diabetes—including administering insulin when required—and providing daily tube feeding for students who require nutritional support via gastrostomy or nasogastric tubes. I work closely with the SEND team, external healthcare providers, and phase leaders to ensure these pupils have individual health care plans that are reviewed regularly and followed with consistency and care.
I also coordinate and support school-based vaccination programmes, liaising with health professionals and informing staff, parents, and carers as needed. I ensure accurate documentation and secure maintenance of student medical records in compliance with safeguarding, health data protection, and GDPR regulations.
Part of my role involves leading on accident reporting procedures, including completion and escalation of incidents under RIDDOR legislation and recording all health and safety matters in the school’s management system. I ensure the medical room is hygienic and well-organised, stock levels are maintained, and first aid kits around the school are checked and replenished regularly to comply with Health & Safety standards.
Additionally, I send health-related communications to families, such as hygiene reminders or illness notifications, and I deliver basic health education and staff training on medical conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and allergy management (including EpiPen use). I also play an active role in promoting a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment, working across departments to ensure children with medical needs are fully supported and able to access all aspects of school life.
