Summary

Personal Statement

Accounting is a fundamental part of the business world, it can greatly influence and enhance growth, management and decision making within any business. What interests me, is that by analysing financial information, accountants can aid the growth of businesses.

This influence that accounting has on businesses is what has motivated me to pursue a career in this field. My interest is heightened by speaking to my brother who was previously employed at PWC in London.

Since a young age I have enjoyed and excelled at mathematics and surrounding subjects which incorporate mathematics to help determine a reliable and statistical outcome. I have always had a great interest in problem solving, which is fortunately a fundamental aspect of accounting. This has allowed me to improve my diagnostic abilities. Whilst attending secondary school I completed the silver level of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, one of only six students within my school.

Within my final year at university I was one of four students nominated to present my dissertation at a Animal Welfare conference, this aided with building my confidence for public speaking as well as developing my critical thinking skills.

Growing up with my parents who run their own Telecoms Power company has fuelled my curiosity for the accounting and financial side of business, particularly as I enjoy quantitative analysis. I would find it very intriguing to analyse business figures to help provide solutions to financial problems they may be facing.

My previous role as an admin assistant at an electrical company allowed me to produce high quality accurate and sensitive records, demonstrating my ability to remain professional when dealing with confidential records. I prepared documents and generally aided with organisation, also I was able to offer support within the office to all other members.

Outside of my work interests, I am Grade 8 Saxophone and play piano to a competent level. From a young age I developed a love for horse riding and throughout school, college and university I was able to balance academic work with horse riding. This highlights my proficiency with time management, organisational skills and commitment.

A key skill of a successful accountant is the ability to communicate well and build good relationships with people. I believe that my volunteer work teaching disabled people and children to ride horses has helped me develop this. Within this role I had to recognise people's differences and adapt my own teaching styles, demonstrating good interpersonal skills and my ability to interact in a calm and professional manner. Also, in my current employment I have a wide range of clients to which I have to communicate with, developing my skills further.

At my current employment I work the role as head stud groom. A head stud groom is in charge of dealing with the mares and keeping track of when they are due to foal down as well as assisting them foaling down. A further aspect involves organising the mares to be inseminated for the next season and handling and caring for all offspring immediately after they are born until they are adults. The yard where I currently work is a top level professional competition yard, allowing me to work in a high pressure environment whilst maintaining professional standards. Alongside professional standards, part of my job requires me to communicate and accommodate clients’ needs which has greatly improved my communication skillsThis highlights my proficiency as a leader and also a teamplayer. I also partake in a different role where I am part of the team, this shows that I am also an effective team player. There are times when I am required to take sole charge within my role making me much more confident. I started working when I was at university as a part- time member, before becoming full-time once I graduated, this shows my organisational and time management skills.
