I Worked with an electrician as an electrician’s mate for 1 year in mainly domestic dwellings and occasionally industrial settings. During my time as an electrician’s mate I gained important practical skills and theoretical knowledge. For example, importance of safe isolation before working on circuits and the 10 steps required to carry it out safely.

Common tasks I was assigned include:

• Wiring in cables for rewires or new electrical circuits
• Glanding steel wired armour cables
• Chasing in back boxes flush to the wall
• First fixing and second fixing sockets, ceiling rose and pendants, lighting outlets, consumer units, fuse spurs etc.
• Performing safe isolation using a proving unit before working on electrical circuits
