Summary

Currently I am employed as a clinical sister in Mulberry ward St Cross, Rugby Part of University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, along side this role I also work for Public Health England, as A Track and Trace senior officer.

Mulberry Ward which I am based on is a medical/ rehab ward with 6 stroke beds. However since since out break of Covid we are now a medical ward, I have gained extensive knowledge since working as a band 6 enabling me to thrive and further my knowledge, skills and learning including ILS, finance, datix, erostering (staffing issues), being a cascade trainer in many areas, encouraging mandatory training, recruitment, providing support for new employees, performance development reviews, attending sisters meeting, introducing changes to the ward. and conducting audits to deadlines some of these part of a national audit, for example Safety Thermometer which is an audit where on the same day every month, wherever the patient is being cared for data is collected and can be used to understand the proportion of patients affected by harm, agree baselines, set improvement goals and detect change over time at a local, regional or national level.

Whilst in my role it has been an important factor to make myself as available as much possible, supporting the ward also my manager at critical times when staffing and moral has been low, I have been approachable for patients, relatives and staff to communicate issues and frustrations they may have, enabling them to discuss issues confidentially, finding solutions that work best for both the ward and themselves. For example In particular discharges can be a sensitive subject to some families, creating anxiety for relatives, therefore working closely with therapists, social workers and the discharge team is a important factor to facilitate a safe discharge . I have introduced new ideas and implemented changes continuing to contribute to a safe environment for the patients, I have ensured these changes are achieved this by making documentation that is completed when such tasks are completed ensuring records are kept. some of these ideas have been rolled out on other wards within the hospital.

As part of my current role, this also entails the responsibility of rotational site co ordinatior of the hospital site, managing beds assessing and liaising with the control room to enable appropriate transfers of patients to other wards in the hospital, within this role I take part in 4 daily conference calls per shift, assisting with the movement of patients in a safely timely manner , ensuring deadlines are achieved for example ED waiting times are kept with in the national deadlines, this role also involves being a member of the on call medical emergency team assisting with urgent care, cardiac arrests, security alerts, fire alerts and staffing issues within the whole hospital. Ensuring a safe clean environment adhering to trust polices and guidelines in conjunction also with Infection control protocol.

During the current Covid pandemic, I have been fortunate enough to assist further and expand my skills by becoming a Clinical Contact Caseworker for Test and Trace for PHE, I have enjoyed this role and it has given me more of an in site to national roles available also how PHE operate ensuring he country is at its safest. This has also enabled myself to reassure the general public therefore, I am continuing to give back to the community the reason I became a nurse.

During my time in the endoscopy department I was required to assist doctors in an intense procedure room, in this role responding quickly and using initiative is essential, making decisions and troubleshooting are a required skill. On call was also required as the role of band 5 nurse to assist in the Resus department of ED or ITU for emergency internal bleeds a number of times a month.

My previous role in Day Surgery Unit at UHCW enabled me to gain experience in many areas, including pre-operative, post-operative and staffing issues within a hospital setting alongside Co-ordinating beds in the unit, this was usually on weekends or nights when the emergency department were full and an overflow department were needed. It was the coordinators responsibility to establish using initiative and previous medical history to assess the suitability of patients for the ward, not only for the safety of the patients and fellow patients but also for the staff and their safety. Leading to prioritising patients needs over planned surgery. On a daily basis effective communication was key to the role with patients relatives and MDT. Empathy and tact were ensured to optimum patient care, for example admissions, observations, administration of drugs, hygiene needs, healthcare advice for post-operative care.

Skills achieved on DSU Include managing staffing, cannulation, IV trained, paediatric nursing and lifesaving along with competently running prostate biopsy clinics, cystoscopy clinics and assisting with audits.

Throughout my nursing career I have learnt about numerous hospital policies, which continually change, for example one of them being Infection Control, it is important all staff adhere to this, ensuring high standards are met by keeping infection to a minimum to ensure patient safety is not at risk.

Maintaining trust values are a tool that I conduct my role with on daily basis maintaining openness, honesty, pride, learning, partnership and respect improving my skills on a regular basis. working together towards world class.

I am excited about the future prospects and challenges that lie ahead of me.

I am happy in my current roles, however as this post has been advertised and being involved in the covid pandemic, this role I know I would be very passionate about, promoting the importance of health and lifestyle protection in particular out of a hospital setting.
