Project Title: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the Netherlands & Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in Thailand: A Comparative Investigation into Effective Second Language Pedagogy, The Theory-Practice Conundrum and Teacher Identity.

My research was a cross-cultural investigation into foreign language acquisition, with the overarching aim of gaining a better understanding of how/in what ways foreign language teaching/learning takes place, what instructional leaders’ attitudes are to such methods, and how Dutch/Thai data can be compared. Specifically, my research investigated teacher attitudes and motivation in a CLIL environment (the Netherlands) compared to a CLT environment with a heavy reliance on grammar-translation methods (rural Thailand).

English Language Teacher

  • During an academic year, I worked as an English teacher at the Language Policy Service of Valencia University, Spain. During this time, I also acquired eight private students with whom I worked on a weekly basis. Both at the university and with my private students, I offered classes from A2-C2 level, to students with a number of objectives (IELTS, pending study/work placements, business English), across ages 12-75, from all over the globe.
  • Set a curriculum, and to create my own resources and lessons, of which I now have a considerable catalogue.
  • Evaluating policy and programme issues to provide strategic organizational direction and insight.
  • Collaborate with the International Recruitment Team, as I was able to offer key insights given the fact that I was both an international employee, and indeed still a university student, myself. As such, I would attend bi-weekly meetings with the international department to evaluate the effectiveness of current recruitment strategies, create recruitment events/materials, or to simply proof-read/translate English language reports to external partners.

Freelance Translator

Freelance

While positioned as an English teacher at the University of Valencia, I also undertook frequent translation projects which were predominantly academic in nature. As a large proportion of my students were professors and PhD students, I was regularly asked to translate academic articles, book sections and presentations from Spanish into English. Many of the pieces were rooted in the humanities, although some projects undertaken pertained to Law and Earth Sciences.
