EMILY UNDERWOOD

Ely,Cambridgeshire

Summary

As an enthusiastic and determined individual, I am always keen to learn and improve my skills. In my free time I enjoy playing hockey, guitar, singing, and reading. By playing hockey I have learnt to be resilient, reliable and able to work well as a team or under my own initiative. Through performing (singing, playing guitar, or acting) I have acquired the skills needed to be confident when working under pressure, and effectively problem solve. During my A level studies I have developed and extended my passion for science – in particular for plant biology – and enjoy building my knowledge of this while planning to study it at university.

Volunteering

Hills Road Sixth Form College: Biology Peer Mentor – November 2025 – May 2026

During year 13, I mentored a year 12 student in Biology every week, in order to improve her understanding of difficult concepts, as well as improving my communication skills. I planned each week and created PowerPoints on different topics to organise our time effectively.

Oxfam Charity Shop: Charity Shop Worker – March 2023 – August 2023

As part of my Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award, I volunteered in Oxfam charity shop. It solidified my organisational skills, improved my time management, and built my confidence in a public facing role.

Guitar Club: Assistant Guitar Coach – January 2023 – March 2023

For my Duke of Edinburgh Silver award, I reinforced my communication skills by being trusted to run smaller groups of children, teaching them how to play while maintaining focus.

Ely City Hockey Club: Coach for younger children – September 2021 – May 2022

During my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, I coached younger children at my hockey club – this involved me stepping out of my comfort zone, as I had little experience engaging with younger children. My confidence increased hugely, and I was trusted to run drills on my own with up to 35 children. I received lots of positive feedback from parents, children, and other coaches, as I made sure that the children were developing their hockey skills and still having fun.
