Emilie Ghio

Lecturer in law with expertise in business, corporate and commercial law subjects and significant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Established and active corporate insolvency and rescue law scholar with an expansive domestic and international research portfolio, which includes numerous and varied publications (books, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, expert technical magazine articles). Emilie is currently working on four ongoing externally-funded research projects and is engaged with a wide network of UK and international academics, industry representatives and policymakers in corporate insolvency law. Author of Redefining Harmonisation. Lessons from EU insolvency law (2022) and English Corporate Insolvency Law. A Primer (2022). She is currently editing E. Ghio and R. Perlingeiro (eds.), National Legal Systems: Convergence or Divergence? Lessons from Contemporary Crises (Springer, 2023); and E. Ghio, J. Wood and J. Gant, Re-examining insolvency law and theory in the 21st century (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2024).

• 2022: (PI) The Stigma of Insolvency in the UK: A post-COVID Pilot Study on Business Failure - Awarded £1,900 by Edinburgh Napier University, The Business School to run an empirical study on business owners' and managers' perception of business failure, insolvency and insolvency law
• 2021: (PI) Birmingham City University Start-Up Grant - Awarded £2,000 to support my cross-disciplinary, empirical project on ‘Public Perception of Harmonisation in the UK'

• 2020: (PI) United States National Science Foundation (NGS) - Generated $8,000 for my project titled ‘New Challenges for Civil and Commercial Law in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic'
• 2018: (Co-I) European Commission - Joint application with Professor Irene Lynch Fannon (University College Cork, Ireland) - Awarded €322,594 by the JUSTICE Programme under the Action grants to support transnational projects to promote judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters. The project is titled ‘Judicial Co-Operation Supporting Economic Recovery in Europe'.
