As a Senior Healthcare Assistant in the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre, i aim to support nurses and doctors in assessing and caring for patients who need urgent medical attention. My main duties include taking vital signs, performing ECGs and blood tests, helping with personal care, monitoring patients, preparing patients for tests and updating records also escalating any deterioration quickly to the medics and nurses. I am also expected to help manage patient flow, maintain infection control, and support junior staff in a busy, fast-paced hospital environment.
During my time as a health care assistant on the Acute Medical Unit, I provided and assisted with high-quality, person-centred care, such as washing, dressing, and maintaining the independence and dignity of the patient. Although the Acute Medical Unit was a fast turnover period, I often had opportunities to build strong and trusting relationships with patients by providing continuous support and delivering the best possible care I could. As well as this, I am expected to support and assist with patients' nutrition and hydration needs, also making sure I correctly chart this in the patients' records.
