  • Provide technical assurance for thermo-mechanical and installation design calculations, including pulling tension, sidewall pressure, bending radius, and installation forces, ensuring the design is robust and installation-ready.
  • Assess trench cross-sections, duct bank structures, joint bay civil designs, and link box/link pillar configurations, ensuring alignment with SSEN engineering practices and safe integration with the wider LT14 route.
  • Review and approve Inspection and Test Plans, ITP/ITPS, and testing documentation for HV/EHV cable systems, ensuring full coverage for cables, joints, and terminations in accordance with IEC 62895, IEC 62067, IEC 60840, and CIGRE TB 852.
  • Attend, witness, and provide technical assurance during system qualification and type testing of the complete cable system, including land and submarine cables, metallic return cables, factory joints, straight joints, sectionalised joints, transition joints, and terminations, ensuring compliance with IEC 62895, IEC 62067, IEC 60840, CIGRE TB 852, and NGTS 3.05.16.
  • Lead design risk identification, assessment, and mitigation, addressing geotechnical constraints, thermal hotspots, HDD interfaces, and landfall challenges in line with CDM Designer duties.
  • Ensure continuity from FEED into detailed design, maintaining alignment of route options, technical constraints, and early-stage risk decisions through to construction-ready outputs.
  • Provide technical governance across the LT14 cable package, challenging contractor assumptions, ensuring design consistency, and enforcing SSEN Transmission quality and assurance processes.
  • Resolve multidisciplinary technical queries and interface issues between cable manufacturers, civil contractors, landfall teams, and HVDC converter designers to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, providing guidance on cable system design, thermal modelling, route engineering, standards, and SSEN-specific engineering processes.
  • Ensure readiness for construction by validating all detailed design deliverables, installation procedures, method statements, and commissioning plans in preparation for LT14 execution.
  • Review and validate electromagnetic field (EMF) studies for cable system, ensuring compliance with ICNIRP 2009 exposure limits and relevant IEEE C95.x human exposure guidelines.
  • Review and validate induced voltage and sheath bonding studies for cable systems, including steady‑state and fault‑condition induced sheath voltage performance and bonding arrangements, ensuring analysis aligns with IEEE 575 guidance on sheath induced voltages and industry best practice for personnel and asset safety.
  • Critically assess contractor-proposed deviations from prequalified cable design and construction, evaluating impacts on system performance, reliability, and compliance. Develop and present robust technical justifications and responses for Technical Authority (TA) review and approval, ensuring alignment with CIGRE TB 852 requirements to define and verify appropriate testing regimes for validation of all design, process, and material changes.
