Football referee

Self Employed
Cheltenham & Stroud, Gloucestershire
2021.07 - Current

At 14 years of age, I wanted a job that combined a hobby of mine alongside exercise to keep healthy and maintain a clean mindset. I landed on becoming a football referee as it would allow me to earn my first income whilst playing an active role in the sport I loved.

  • Preparation - Officiated my first game at my local park of which I thoroughly enjoyed. So much so I completed the Gloucestershire FA Referee Course within the same week.
  • Key moments - Within a year of becoming a qualified referee, I was recommended to the biggest football club in Gloucestershire - Bishops Cleeve FC. This allowed for opportunities like being a linesman for a top level Hellenic League game as well as a Forest Green U18 friendly; all at the age of 15.
  • Development - I am now a consistent officiator for local Under 18 and under 21 football games. Being a football referee allows me to experience the behavior of various types of people and make crucial decisions in an extremely high pressure situation, something that I value highly and am certain can be beneficial for my future.

Work Experience

Nailsworth, Gloucestershire
2022.07 - 2022.07

For my first ever work experience, I was able to be taken under the wing of the 'Worlds Greenest' football club, certified by the United Nations - Forest Green Rovers FC. I was present for a total of five days where I completed solo travel there and back during the hottest week ever recorded at the time.

During my time there:

  • Followed management orders and consistently completed tasks daily to a high standard.
  • Assisted in the club store with merchandising and pricing of stock.
  • Created temporary signage for meetings, events and press conferences.

My take away from the experience:

  • Gained knowledge of the fundamentals of maintaining and leading a worldwide scale football club.
  • Understanding methods of budgeting like equipment and kit expenditure and how crucial it can be to being a successful business.
  • How the results of the first team can impact decisions made across all departments associated with Forest Green Rovers.
