Work history

Student physiotherapist placement - stroke rehab

Somerset NHS foundation trust
South Petherton, Somerset
2026.01 - 2026.02

Within my stroke rehab placement, I worked interprofessionally with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, HCAs and rehab assistants. I communicated patient's needs during ward and discharge meetings and what their housing needs would be based off their impairments and equipment needed.

I completed full neuro assessments for patients post stroke, identifying patients impairments, educating patients, creating and updating care plans and delegating when suitable, measuring patients to order specialised equipment e.g. Neurolux shoulder support for patients with subluxed shoulder post stroke due to hypotonia and hemiparesis.

I gained experience using multiple transfer and mobility aids (hoist, sara steady, return, arjo walker, gutterframe, step transfer and walking with wheeled zimmer frame) and knowing when to progress and assess patients on a more advanced aid.

I lead group sessions including a sit to stand class, circuit session and attended upper limb group sessions.

Adapted my assessment, communication and exercises based off patient's cognition and attention, which was required within the placement due to cognitive deficits post-stroke and some patients being neurodivergent.

I accurately and concisely documented patient care plans, group and individual sessions using RIO healthcare record system.

Student physiotherapist, community rehab placement

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS trust
Exeter, Devon
2025.09 - 2025.10

During my community rehab placement I worked collaboratively with the MDT through organising double visits using EPIC healthcare records and making sure to work within my scope of practice and identify others' strengths so that we delivered the highest quality of care for the patient.

Within all areas of healthcare, I aim to provide equitable care and adjust my assessment, treatment plan and communication based off the patients' goals, conditions and understanding. Community placement further improved these skills because I was always respectful and treated patients with dignity and adapted my practice to multiple different health conditions, family/carer dynamics and different home environments.

Since the placement, I have become more passionate about the wider determinants of health and understanding my role in MECC through public health promotion. A large aspect of my role was falls prevention through education, environmental adaptation and prescribing and teaching how to use walking aids. The patients also benefitted from the strength and balance group that I lead to reduce their falls risk and teaching them backwards chaining, promoting independence and patients confidence in doing their ADL's.
