Camp Kerala/Glastonbury Festival

Camp Kerela is the highest class of clamping at Glastonbury. I was working in its restaurant overlooking the festival. These facilities still had to be put up and taken down and my job as well as the service was to help put together the grounds as for the rest of the 12 months it was a neighbouring farm. I would help with the layout of the restaurant and setup. They have asked me back every year.

  • I worked all areas of service. I was chucked in to the deep end, Never having worked service before, we were doing 200 covers a day with a team of 7 Including the kitchen staff.
  • I was given further responsibilities of training other members of staff, managing the floor.
  • I learnt the importance of finishing a task efficiently and effectively.
  • I have learnt good people skills with customers and members of staff a like. This is the bit I enjoy most about service is all the interactions with people.

Labouring

  • Office refurbishments. I was a labourer. This includes demolition, drywall fixing, clearing the site. I worked part of a larger team, supporting trades to achieve tasks.
  • I also have worked on sites in North Wales working on listed farm houses. Breaking up slaps, preparing for new ones.
  • Semi-skilled work: Relief milking (see below) woodland management, livestock feeding. Tractor driving during harvest time.
  • Also office work. Inputting invoices into Sage and general filing.
  • Morning Milking from 5-8.30am. During Lockdown I would do the morning shift and be back in time for online lessons, and then do the afternoon shifts.
  • I was responsible for keeping the yards clean and hosing them down and being part of the team, milking a herd of 550 cows. It required remaining flexible willing and determined to complete each task to the best of my ability.

Security Steward

  • Company Overview: Largest agricultural show in Europe (240,000 visitors over 4 days, 20,000 camping).
  • Every year - volunteering as Security Steward for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show.
  • The Security Stewards are the principal communication between the show administrators and the security firm with 70 staff on the ground. This requires tactful communication skills both with the general public and also with the security firm.
  • Long hours - up to 17-hour day, living on site, very challenging and rewarding.
  • I learnt a lot about the different roles that make up an effective team and the power of good communication.
  • Largest agricultural show in Europe (240,000 visitors over 4 days, 20,000 camping).
