As a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne, I am privileged to work in one of the leading tertiary care hospitals with an exceptional Rheumatology Department. My role encompasses a wide range of clinical, supervisory, and administrative responsibilities, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to patient care and departmental excellence.
Current Responsibilities
1. Specialist Connective Tissue Diseases Clinics
I run specialist outpatient clinics focused on managing complex connective tissue diseases (CTDs) such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis, myositis, and vasculitis. These clinics allow me to provide tailored, evidence-based care plans to address the unique needs of each patient.
2. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Meetings
I actively participate in regular MDT meetings, collaborating with colleagues from radiology, pathology, and other specialties. These discussions help ensure optimal decision-making for managing challenging cases, particularly those involving multisystem diseases.
3. Supervision of Specialist Nurses
I supervise and mentor specialist rheumatology nurses, supporting their roles in nurse-led clinics, biologic monitoring, and patient education. My goal is to ensure that our team delivers seamless and high-quality care to patients.
4. DMARDs Monitoring and Safety
A significant aspect of my work involves addressing challenges related to Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) monitoring. This includes managing adverse effects, optimizing safety protocols, and ensuring that patients receive the most effective and safe treatments.
5. Administrative Duties
I regularly liaise with general practitioners (GPs), other specialties, and patients to ensure continuity of care. My administrative responsibilities include effective communication of management plans, addressing patient queries, and coordinating care for complex cases.
Additional Contributions
Beyond my clinical role, I take pride in supporting the development of junior colleagues and allied health professionals, helping to maintain the Freeman Hospital’s reputation for excellence in rheumatology care.
Working in such a dynamic and supportive environment, I am able to deliver high-quality care to my patients while collaborating with a fantastic multidisciplinary team. This role allows me to combine my passion for clinical excellence, education, and innovation in rheumatology.
This is an excellent opportunity and certainly I'm delighted to work in this prestigious department which is the UK centre of excellence for Behcets disease and also expertise in vasculitis and connective tissue disorders. My job plan includes early arthritis clinics where I also perform MSK Ultrasounds. The regular multidisciplinary team meetings are indeed very useful where we discuss complex cases and their management. I am thoroughly enjoying the post.
As consultant rheumatologist duties include outpatient clinics, ward reviews, advice and guidance as well as administrative work. I'm also supervising specialist nurses and pharmacists in clinics on regular basis. I do assessments with the specialist registrar such as case based discussions. We have weekly MDTs where I would discuss complex clinical cases which not only is best for better patient outcomes but also for my own learning experience.
Excellent department. Thoroughly enjoyed my time. Was involved in MDTs, nurse supervision and teaching.
This was a Locum consultant rheumatologist post which includes out patient clinics, inpatient's care MDTs, supervision of clinical fellow and specialist nurses. It is lovely to work here and certainly the staff is amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.
Rheumatic diseases are complicated autoimmune disorders and these conditions need to be timely diagnosed and treated to avoid long-term complications, morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis definitely can be a challenge and therefore needs expertise. As a trained rheumatologist from the United Kingdom my focus is to diagnose these conditions well in time and treat them based on individual patients requirements and comorbidities in the light of evidence based practices. The treatment itself involves various conventional disease modifying drugs as well as further strong immunosuppressive medications called biologics. These medications require appropriate screening and monitoring and I try to ensure this during the course of treatment. I also do joints and soft tissue injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic and disease activity monitoring purposes. I also have an interest in pain management. I believe in quality care and this is what I tried to ensure while managing various rheumatological conditions.
Working at Afridi Medical Complex was great experience. I was seen our diverse range of patients in my clinics and also as in patients through referrals. I was involved in multidisciplinary team meetings as well as teaching and training. Overall I had excellent feedback from patients and colleagues which was a great on or for me.
Having enough of experience from the United Kingdom, I decided to go back to Pakistan. My aim was to provide state of the art care to patients in the first place but most importantly to train doctors as well. Under the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) I trained doctors in rheumatology and some of them have already acquired their fellowships. Outpatients, inpatients care was provided to thousands of patients. I also started Musculoskeletal Ultrasound service to improve quality of care for our patients. The treatments patients had been getting were well up to the standards of the United Kingdom in the available resources although there were limitations particularly in access to biologics.
This was a huge management experience indeed and I did improve quality of care for all patients attending our hospital in different areas. Lady Reading Hospital has Approximately 2000 Beds and working as Medical Director did help me a lot in so many ways on personal and professional levels.
Looking at the situation of medical specialties, the Chairman BOG LRH-MTI asked to me take charge as Chairman of the Medical and Allied specialties. It was indeed an honour but a great challenge in so many ways. I took this opportunity and started working on different aspects of service improvement. During this time my focus was on the following areas.
1) Establishment of Acute Medical Unit
Established a state of the art Acute Medical Unit (AMU) along with peers and colleagues in the Management. This was the first of its kind not only KP but the whole country. I wanted to streamline flow of medical patients particularly in the acute settings. With the Director A/E I made pathway for admission into the AMU and further transfer to subspecialties or cold beds.
2) Working framework and for all medical consultants
I proposed that we needed to have revised and clear job plans for all medical consultants. That ensured protected hours of work for each consultant and also highlighted the need for more consultants in different specialties
3) Streamlining out patients
I worked extremely hard on the proposal of the Board of Governors to streamline outpatients by putting more consultants in the OPDs to ensure that only a certain number of patients are seen by each consultant to improve quality.
4) Duty rotas
Regularly did rosters formulation and implementation. There had been some serious issues but using my communication skills with the help of other colleagues we were able to have clear duty rotas for almost all medical specialties
5) Going paperless and online
As chairman Medical and Allied I was thoroughly involved in implementation of LRH-MTI policy to go paperless. Clinicians started requesting investigations online and also view them online including X-Rays and bloods
6) Recruitment of new faculty
Was involved in scrutinizing application forms and shortlisting process and conducted interviews to recruit new faculty staff in different medical specialties
7) Mortality and morbidity meetings
Started mortality and morbidity meetings so that we could learn from what we had been doing and identify areas of potential improvement
8) Formation of cardiac arrest team
Established dedicated team and protocols for cardiac arrest
Covered a colleague Consultant Rheumatologist who was on leave. Excellent Department. Saw some very interesting cases.
Covered colleague for 4 weeks
It was a great experience. The work environment was really nice. I liked the weekly MDT meetings and regular Radiology meetings on weekly basis where we discuss a lot of interesting and challenging cases. I particularly liked the fact that here I got the opportunity to see patients with metabolicbone diseases also.
Worked as Consultant Rheumatologist providing rheumatology service to a population of 300,000 people in the catchment area of Wrexham Maelor Hospital in North Wales along with two other consultant colleagues. It was a great opportunity to be in a substantive post. The experience was really good as I did general rheumatology, CTD clinics, had a cohort of myositis and vasculitis patients and did a lot of joints scanning.
As part management duties I would like to highlight the following
1) Networking in North-Wales and Mercy-side
2) Establishment of dedicated myositis services in North Wales
3) Chairing departmental business meetings
4) Proposal of business cases for materials and equipment
5) Events organisation within North Wales and North West Rheumatology Group
6) Involvement in teaching and training
I did weekly clinics at this private hospital. t was a nice experience to see patients in private sector.
Most of the work was the same as my current post, however being part of the "Early arthritis Team" at the Freeman Hospital, I did early arthritis clinics more extensively with regular use of musculoskeletal ultrasound scan in the assessment of my patients.
Rheumatology Specialist Registrar for 2 years, I completed training, after which I started as Consultant. It was a great experience as I worked with 5 consultant rheumatologists and worked at different hospitals in Belfast including Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast City Hospital, The Royal Hospital Belfast, Lagan Valley Hospital and Mater Hospital.
Learned a lot of clinical Rheumatology. Worked with world re-known mentors including Prof Ian McInnes and Prof Roger Sturrock.
This was an excellent opportunity as a registrar. Prior to this I had done rotations in various specialties of Medicine in the same hospital including rheumatology. It was a great Department. I had done and audits, made database and published articles. I also completed my Post-Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine from Middlesex University, London during this time.

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at my profile. I have substantial experience in managing a wide range of rheumatic diseases, having served as a Consultant Rheumatologist in England, Wales, and Scotland. Over the years, I have developed an understanding of the complexities involved in treating patients with different rheumatic conditions.
In addition to my clinical role within the NHS in the United Kingdom, I have honed my leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and quality improvement techniques. My experience extends to management and networking, as well as enhanced teaching and training capabilities. I have served as both a substantive consultant and a locum consultant, with my substantive post being at Wrexham. Following this role, I continued as a Consultant Rheumatologist in various NHS hospitals.
As Head of Rheumatology, I have chaired business meetings, organized events, and built a cohesive team of doctors and specialist nurses. I also served as Secretary General of the Khyber Medical Association (KMA) UK for over a year, during which I introduced innovative changes to its Annual General Meeting.
My passion for research is particularly focused on genetics in rheumatoid arthritis. I have published articles in this field and am eager to further this aspect of my professional experience.
As a member of the active faculty and an MRCP PACES Examiner at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, I have regularly participated in MRCP PACES exams both in the UK and internationally. Nationally, I am a member of the British Society for Rheumatology and the Scottish Society for Rheumatology UK.
I have had the privilege of presenting my work at various esteemed platforms, including the British Society for Rheumatology, Scottish Society for Rheumatology, Irish Society for Rheumatology, Japanese College of Rheumatology, Asian Pacific League Against Rheumatism, and Pakistan Society for Rheumatology.
By the very nature of my specialty as a rheumatologist, I have been practicing general medicine alongside all the way. My training as a registrar in Ireland and then Glasgow Royal Infirmary did include acute medical on calls and as Medical Registrar I used to be team leader of the "Hospital at Night Team". Prior to my Registrar posts, I had rotations in geriatrics, endocrine, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology and medical oncology as senior house officer and hence I had enough exposure to acute medicine and different subspecialties. At higher level, I remained Chairman of Medicine and Allied Specialties and then Medical Director at Lady Reading Reading Hospital-MTI where apart from clinical care, I managed and improved overall service delivery by identifying quality indices and then working through those to achieve required targets. Thus from first hand clinical care to higher management of various medical subspecialties, I have acquired clinical and leadership skills in General Internal Medicine and its subspecialties.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Re: Dr Suleman Khan, Consultant Rheumatologist
I'm delighted to provide a reference for Dr Khan. We were most fortunate to have the services of Suleman as locum consultant rheumatologist here at Aintree University Hospital this summer and autumn, when he was covering illness absence of a colleague.
Suleman is an excellent doctor in all respects. He has fitted in with all activities of the rheumatology department here. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a first class understanding of all aspects of rheumatology including esoteric and fine print details that only develop with experience. Suleman's approach to patients is exceptional. He has proven most popular with patients, who have rated him very highly both directly in formal feedback and indirectly (which I hear from not only patients, but other clinical staff).
Suleman is very approachable and has proven to be the most pleasant colleague. He has fully participated in all aspects of the rheumatology department: from ward rounds, through educational meetings, to clinics and has fostered excellent working relationship at all levels from secretaries and nursing staff to junior doctors and consultants.
I would be extremely keen were Suleman to have chosen to stay here at Aintree, as he is such an excellent colleague. He is sorely missed as he understandably moved on to another position.
I'm happy to provide any further information should this be required, but the bottom line is clearly that Suleman is an excellent rheumatology consultant and any unit in which he works will be enhanced by his involvement.
With best wishes,
Yours faithfully

Dr Khan was employed as a Full-time Locum Consultant in Rheumatology for the period of March 1st 2024 – October 31st 2024, in order to cover a period of sickness absence. During this time duties included general new and follow up outpatient clinics, cover for ward referrals as well as associated outpatient administration. The casemix here is varied and included the full range of core rheumatology conditions, as well as some patients under the care of specialty services such as Connective Tissue Diseases. He also participated in departmental governance activities such as attendance at monthly meetings, as well as our local and regional education sessions (Approximately 2 Hours per week Departmental MDTs, and 2 Hours Monthly Regional Meetings). Both from direct observation, and feedback from a variety of staff including senior clinicians, nursing and admin staff, I am sure that Dr Khan is a very capable and experienced Rheumatologist, able to manage the full range of rheumatology conditions including the more complex. In addition to this, he has shown himself to be diligent and reliable in all matters both clinical and non-clinical.
