The University of Benin Teaching Hospital has about 860 beds and is one of the best multi-speciality Tertiary Hospitals in West Africa, attending to about 150,000 patients/per year.
As an intern at the prestigious teaching Hospital, I majorly rotated through Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatric, Surgery, and Internal Medicine. However, during these major rotations, I had the privilege of rotating through sub-units such as the Cardiothoracic unit, neonatal unit, and Paediatric Surgery.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology – September 2018 – December 2018
- Involves 12-week intensive training on Obstetric and Gynaecological emergencies, gynae – oncology, Mother and Child Care, Delivery etc.
- Worked in the Gynae – Oncology unit. Most patients were managed for different oncological cases such as cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, gestational trophoblastic diseases etc.
- I administered chemotherapy under supervision.
- Carried out daily ward rounds with a consultant, prescribing medications, passing several urethral catheters, and working up patients for surgeries such as myomectomy, caesarean section, total abdominal hysterectomy etc. some of which I assisted in the surgery.
- Taking detailed booking histories of over 5 patients during an antenatal clinic, examining them and accurately entering the information into the hospital database.
- Involved in the management of obstetric emergencies such as pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, assisted and took deliveries.
- Suturing several episiotomies under supervision.
Paediatrics – December 2018 – March 2019
- 12-week intensive training in the Paediatric cardiology unit, Special care baby unit, Pediatric high dependency unit and Children emergency with daily case presentation to team members.
- Observed and assisted in performing an echocardiography.
- Involved in managing acute and chronic patients under the supervision of a senior.
- Performed procedures like Venipuncture, IV cannulation, Urethral catheterization etc.
- Worked in children’s emergency; took detailed paediatric history, formulated a diagnosis, ordered investigations, and developed a management plan for each patient under consultant guidance.

- Administered IV fluids, medications, and blood transfusions after consulting with seniors.

Surgery Department March 2019 – June 2019
- 12-week intensive training in surgical-related cases, rotating through specialized units as Ear, Nose and throat, Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedics, and General surgery.
- Involved in a weekly outpatient clinic.
- Involved in the management of cases such as acute otitis media, Meniere’s disease, etc. and surgeries ranging from tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, laryngectomy,
and tracheostomy during ENT rotation.
- Carried out surgical and medical treatment of Paediatric in-patients and outpatients. Surgical cases include hydrocelectomy and anorectal malformation repair.
- Performed several male circumcisions.
- Involved in the management of chronic arthritis, fractures, and surgeries such as limb amputation, hip replacement, and many more during Orthopaedics rotation. The unit worked alongside general surgeons in emergency trauma dealing with bony and soft tissue injuries admitted through the Accident and Emergency department.
- Carried out pre-and post-operative care for patients going for surgery.
Acute and General Medicine – June 2019 – September 2019
- 12-week intensive training in the Endocrinology unit, Accident and Emergency Unit and the Acute Medical Ward with specialized care for the elderly, and patients with diabetes and its associated complications.
Involves responding to emergency calls related to this speciality and managing medical emergencies such as hypertensive emergencies, diabetic ketoacidosis, acute renal failure, hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, and heart failure.
- I was involved in the ward daily ward rounds, acute medical assessment, prescribing medication, and IV cannulation.
- Managing sepsis in the elderly with a focus on urinary tract infections and chest infections.
