Summary

I am a newly qualified nurse and received my pin in March 2023.
Before studying for my nursing degree, I worked at NUH from 2017 starting as a health care assistant on the Advanced Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU). The unit is 12-bed ward where I learned various skills and gained knowledge of respiratory disorders while caring for critically ill patients. I work well in groups and am motivated to work individually, prioritising my workload with time management and organisational skills.
I've learned that each patient has different needs, and my knowledge and learning abilities have allowed me to work efficiently and successfully, aiding and providing health advice while also building rapport and trust.
Working in a hospital has given me the opportunity to gain a wide range of clinical skills and knowledge while assisting nurses and doctors with minor procedures. After completing my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Adult Nursing degree, I applied for a vacancy on a surgical ward specialising in upper GI pre op post op. I had 2 student nurse placements here and picked up many NHSP HCA shifts. Over the last four months, I have cared for my own patients, delivering a high standard of care in accordance with the NMC code of conduct and NUH behavioural guidelines, creating a safe environment, and even though the ward and staff are fantastic, I have decided that I would like to advance my career in medicine.
My nurse training taught me how to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Assisting with tasks as a student nurse has given me the confidence to advocate excellent practices such as patient safety, medicines management, hand hygiene, infection control, and always maintaining privacy and dignity.
At NUH, I collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary team and my nursing colleagues. I've gained outstanding interpersonal skills, as well as my understanding of information governance, which is crucial in nursing because it's required to maintain patient confidentiality when taking calls and handling paperwork. In addition, I have gained great people skills that enable me to support and console patients and their families during difficult times.
My 3.2 placement was in the emergency department, so I am used to working in a busy unit, this was difficult at times, however, I can remain calm and alleviate the pressure of others around me by offering support.
I am a quick learner and willing to participate in any training sessions that would support me in my new role and help me reach my goals. If I am unsure or need support in situations, I am confident to seek advice.
I am highly motivated, punctual, and always professional.
Since leaving school, I've generally worked with the elderly, providing care and support in a safe environment, either as part of a team or on my own.
While working as a senior care assistant in the care home, I worked alongside the district nurses to perform procedures, treat wounds, and provide patient education.
Before becoming a senior care assistant, I cared for a young man with a serve learning disabilities, assisting, and supporting him with all aspects of care.
I am an open, passionate individual with a good sense of humour, contributing to teamwork and a positive working atmosphere. My coworkers can always count on me for help and support, both on and off the job.
I want to apply for this position because I'd like to start my nursing career in a field that interests me while expanding my knowledge and abilities.
I am applying for this post because I have gained certain features of the person specification in my previous roles and nurse training.
