Support Worker

Catch 22 - Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle upon Tyne
2015.07 - 2015.08
  • Over the summer months of 2015 I worked for the National Citizen Service; a government organisation that gets young people involved in their community. My job role was very fulfilling and made me feel very proud. I served as a team leader along with another colleague and two interns. Altogether I worked roughly 12 weeks, from the month of June to August. We would take a group of 15 young adults on excursions that had been planned by NCS. For 2 weeks of each term I was asked to work away in Newcastle city centre and my favourite place, Kingswood. My main role was to make sure that all the teenagers were supervised and supported, throughout their time on the summer camp. I was responsible for their well being and making sure that there was no bullying within my group, or any others. I also made sure that all the young adults in my group had everything they needed for the excursions, such as the right medication. Some of the members of my group had learning difficulties, and therefore needed extra encouragement to interact with one another. To be good at this role I had to have the right attitude. I needed to be fun, playful and caring, as well as have strict and mature attitude for the youths to take me seriously, especially since there wasn’t a lot of age gap between us. This job was the biggest and most fulfilling opportunity to date, and I am very grateful to have been a part of it. It was such a rewarding job aspect, and has taught me to be confident as well as being a leader.

Additional information

I took time away from full-time employment to prioritise my family responsibilities as a father of three, including supporting children with autism. Managing appointments, educational support, and structured routines required resilience, organisation, and clear communication—skills that are highly transferable to the workplace.

Alongside these responsibilities, I returned to higher education and am currently studying English Literature and History at Northumbria University. My studies have strengthened my critical thinking, research capability, written communication, and ability to analyse complex information. I am now motivated to re-enter the workforce and apply both my academic training and real-world problem-solving skills in a professional setting.
