Administration clerk

Birkdale High School
Dewsbury, Kirklees

This was a 2-week work experience placement during my time in high school.

  • Leadership and management: I was the first person you would see as you came into the school, I was to make sure that any inquiries were swiftly answered, phone calls answered, and redirected if needed.
  • Parent engagement: Communicating with parents, disgruntled or otherwise, conflict resolution was a main part of this, and when asking to speak with a member of staff, I could sufficiently support them and calm them down before handing them over to whom they wished to speak with and was commended multiple times because of this.
  • Taking notes and using a filing system efficiently: Taking notes from students, people on the phone, and other members of staff and making sure all notes were dispersed properly and promptly.
  • Using machinery: such as photocopiers, scanners, and supporting students when using wheelchair accessible lifts.

Clinical support worker

Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Leeds
10.2014 - 11.2015
  • Patient care: First and foremost, my main role was to assist a wide variety of patients and their families with daily activities to make life easier for them when leaving the hospital or support them during end-of-life treatment. This could be anything from bathing, dressing, and feeding, to helping them with any toileting needs. This also included helping them with their mobility which required a lot of moving and handling, with which I had extensive training.
  • Monitoring Vital Signs and recording of data: One of my roles was to take patients' vital signs, which consisted of blood pressure monitoring, pulse, temperature, respiratory rates, and oxygen levels also known as SATS. I would then be required to fill out specific forms and charts to monitor each patient's care.
  • Assisting with procedures: I would often be called upon to assist with and watch many treatments and procedures alongside nurses and the odd doctor. This was anything from Cannulation and catheterization to CPR and medication management. This was often because I would ask questions about how to progress and learn more in all medical fields, which they would be more than happy to help me with. but I was also there to keep them feeling comfortable and relaxed during any procedures which helped both the patient and the nursing staff that were present.
  • Patient Transport: This can range from helping patients to sit up in bed or walking to the toilet, to coming with them as a source of comfort whenever they need to leave the ward for things such as X-rays or specialist treatments.
  • Maintaining cleanliness: I was tasked with maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within the patients' rooms, bathrooms, and common areas such as the general ward. this included the changing of bed linens, tidying and sanitizing surfaces, and ensuring correct waste disposal practices.
  • Providing Emotional Support: As I was constantly working closely with patients and their families, I would grow a close connection and offer emotional support, reassurance, and companionship during difficult times. This was anything like answering questions, supporting grieving families, sitting with people on end-of-life care if their family were not able to get there in time, to give both the patient and family members peace of mind that they were never alone.
